Staying Strong

Episode 5 of 20

Tumbler Shakiem faces a personal challenge - can his hero Jay get him back on track?

Tumbler Shakiem has incredible talent and his coach Chris is keen for him to shine at the upcoming Nationals. As Shakiem has grown so much in the past year and is doing so well Chris has decided to move him into a group with older boys. But Shakiem is finding it even harder than the rest of the boys to focus and is easily distracted because he has ADHD. Coach Chris and Shakiem’s mum are supporting him all the way with kindness and patience and Shakiem has decided to think of his ADHD as his super power. It can be an ongoing challenge though and he can easily get down about it.

So Chris asks one of Shakiem’s heroes, ace tumbler Jay along to one of his gym sessions to inspire him and have chat about a way forward. Jay can see how naturally gifted Shakiem is and wants to do everything he can to keep him on track.

Last season elite tumbler Jay bagged a silver medal in the British Championships and is now busy training himself for the British open coming up. He needs to do brilliantly there to get to the World Championships in Baku in Azerbaijan and is throwing everything at it. When he gets to the nationals, he can’t afford to make any mistakes…

Artistic gymnasts Alice, Kacey and Emily have been a tight knit unit ever since they joined the Bristol gym. Alice lives many miles away in Devon and is so dedicated to her sport she has been making the eight hour journey to training every week and staying with her friends in Bristol so she can train. She loves her gymnastic life but misses her family badly while she’s away and they can’t wait for her to get back to Devon. Now it’s summer Alice wants to return the hospitality to her friends and invites Emily and Kacey to Devon for a beach weekend.

Olympian Alice Kinsella tests the artistic boys’ footwork in the Gym Stars challenge - they have to walk back and forth along a floor beam without falling off while wearing a blindfold!
