Verkooijen: “No solution without China and the USâ€

The CEO of the Global Center on Adaptation says the world’s largest emitters have to come together

Head of the Global Center on Adaptation Patrick Verkooijen said that China, despite continuing to build coal-fired plants, is also struggling with de-carbonising its economy: “At the same time, they’re investing heavily in renewables, wind power and solar power, and that’s exactly the direction of travel.â€

China is the second biggest economy in the world and responsible for around a third of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Speaking to HARDtalk’s Stephen Sackur, Verkooijen said that China ‘needs to do more and have more ambition’, but that need for an increased determination applies to all nations in the world.

He also added that while the world is identifying its priority areas in dealing with the climate emergency, ‘climate adaptation should be front and centre’.

The Global Centre on Adaptation is an international organisation hosted by the Netherlands and working as a solutions broker to help the world’s poorest countries practically adapt to the impacts of climate change. Scientific projections indicate temperatures will continue to rise in the coming decades, irrespective of net zero efforts.
