'When there’s drugs in, the wit’s out'

Word that Nolan is in Maghaberry is spreading through the jail. He meets a murderer who reveals how his ordinary life spiralled out of control, leading, he says, to a man’s death.

Stephen Nolan has been given unprecedented access to see life inside Maghaberry Prison, and news of his presence is spreading through the jail. A visit to the prison barbershop leads to a haircut for the presenter, and a disturbing conversation about a violent burglary. The prisoner breaks down as he recalls the night he committed the crime.

At the cell windows, Stephen encounters ‘banter’, and a talented rapper expresses his frustrations with himself and what he sees as a broken system. In a hard-hitting interview, Stephen talks to Jackie about how his gambling addiction, which he says began a personal descent, ended in a night of horrific violence. He’s now a convicted murderer who has caused incredible pain for the victim’s family. He opens up about his addictions and the impact drink and drugs have had on his life. Should he be given a second chance?

Release from prison back into the world with all its trials and temptation can be difficult. On his way out of the jail, Stephen meets a quietly spoken young man about to be released. He is full of hope and determination about starting again. But as he walks out the door, his bag of clothes in hand, there is the dawning realisation that the outside world can be as scary as the one inside.
