Dangerous Dogs - Is banning breeds the right strategy?

The Ö÷²¥´óÐã has found that 3,500 banned type dogs are legally living with their owners in Great Britain.

The Ö÷²¥´óÐã has found that 3,500 banned type dogs are legally living with their owners in Great Britain. Almost all are Pit Bull Terriers – a breed that has been outlawed for more than thirty years.

If you own one of the affected breeds you can apply to the courts to keep your dog. You have to prove you are a fit and proper person and then comply with strict ownership rules - such as keeping the dog on a lead in public and making sure it wears a muzzle.

XL Bully dogs could be added to the list by the end of the year after a spate of attacks involving the breed.

No one knows exactly how many of these dogs are currently in the UK, but some owners are getting their animals used to wearing a muzzle, in the hope that their pet can be added to an exempt index when the time comes.

The Ö÷²¥´óÐã's Danny Savage has been finding out more for our latest 5 Minutes On podcast.
