Fiona Hill: Trump comeback would lead to ‘hollowing out of the US federal government’

Fmr White House advisor: ‘US leadership’ will be ‘eroded’ under second Trump presidency

Fiona Hill, a former national security adviser to three US presidents, has told the Ö÷²¥´óÐã that if Donald Trump wins the White House again, there would be ‘a hollowing out of the US federal government’. ‘It will become actually quite a weak state,’ she warned.

In an interview with HARDtalk, Dr Hill said there would be ‘a kind of a soft secession or an unravelling of the United States,’ and that allies would find ‘it much more difficult to deal with.’

Donald Trump is seeking to win back the US presidency next year after he was defeated in the 2020 election by Joe Biden. He has frequently accused US institutions and the people who work in them – what he calls ‘the deep state’ – of undermining his first presidency. Trump has vowed to pass reforms that would make it easier for the president’s office to fire employees of the federal government.

Dr Hill is an expert on Russia who worked as adviser to the White House, including as a senior director at the US National Security Council under President Trump. In November 2019, she gave evidence at the first impeachment hearing into the Trump administration’s conduct towards to Russia and Ukraine.

Reflecting on the global multilateral system, Fiona Hill said, ‘United States leadership will also be very much eroded’ during a Trump second term. ‘Trump will withhold any kind of US assistance and will not want to be footing the bill for Nato and European security. And will not want to be giving countries any undue benefit in the trade space. So absolutely, take that seriously,’ she said.
