To have Shane MacGowan's approval for Fairytale of Philadelphia ‘was really special’

Fairytale of Philadelphia producer and former NFL player Connor Barwin discusses getting Pogues star Shane MacGowan’s approval for re-working the famous Fairytale of New York song.

Philadelphia Eagles centre Jason Kelce and his brother, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, re-worked the famous Pogues hit 'Fairytale of New York' for a charity album raising money for youth organisations in the Philadelphia area.

Speaking with Sportshour's Shabnam Younus-Jewell, the 'Fairytale of Philadelphia' producer and former NFL star, Connor Barwin said: "The greatest surprise was Shane MacGowan commented on it and liked it and gave his approval."

In 1987, Kirsty MacColl collaborated with The Pogues for the Christmas song Fairytale of New York, written by MacGowan, which got to number two in the UK chart and remains one of the best-loved Christmas songs in the country

The 65-year-old singer-songwriter died on 30th November 2023 after being unwell for some time.
