29. May: Warming up for Onions

Your weekly seasonal guide to a successful allotment.

Down to earth gardening advice on growing your own fruit and vegetables with allotment gardener Terry Walton, from his plot in the Rhondda Valley.
It's time for the seed onions to go in the ground now that the soil is finally warming up. Terry explains which varieties to choose depending on whether you use them for cooking or in salad, and which avoid the dreaded downy mildew. The first early potatoes are starting to show above the ground, so the next job is to make sure they're nicely earthed up. And Terry shares a positive use for nettles on your plot that can contribute to more successful crops.

To make your own growing plan you can download Terry's Crop Calendar, a guide to what to sow and when to expect a harvest. If you search for Terry Walton's Plotcast online you will see the link.
