African nations usually import almost half of their grain from Ukraine and Russia, along with significant amounts of fertiliser and vegetable oils, but following the invasion of Ukraine, Russia has captured some of Ukraine's biggest seaports and is blocking Ukrainian shipments. Sri Lanka has been hit hard by the surge in global inflation and its reserves of foreign currencies - used to pay for imports - are dwindling.
