It's a song that manages to incorporate loss, insecurity and hope for the future. In its context as a Fairport recording, it reminds me of those no longer with us (Martin Lamble, Sandy Denny, Trevor Lucas) and of all my friends at Cropredy - wherever in the world they may be.

Pete Fenelon, York
Thompson putting a stake in the ground for a career touched more than intermittently by genius.

KE West Leighton Buzzard
It feels timeless, I never get tired of hearing it.

Alison, York
Timeless and stirring, it gives you an overwhelming sense of peace.

Gav Ellis Newport Isle of Wight
i am not a big fan of folk normally but i heard Simon Fowler from OCS do this ages ago on radio one, its one of my all time favourite songs! i have heard so many people do and as yet have not heard a bad version , i suppose that is credit to a song when it can be twisted and bent into so many different genres of music but retain all its original quality and shape! One of thee greatest songs ever!!

Duncan - Skipton
It's probably not the best Fairport song - but it's so much more than a song. It's that moment at the end of a Fairport show or the Cropredy festival when we are all going home but know that we'll all be meeting again soon. It's the expression of a community of fans and musicians, and it's very special for that reason. It is particularly moving at the moment as we don't know whether we'll all be together again at Cropredy this year or not.

Mari Booker Brighton
Every time I hear this wonderful song I visualise all the people I have loved "on the ledge" and the tears well up. You can play it at my funeral.

Neil, Ellesmere Port
It is a pleasant surprise to find this wonderful song in the top 20. Fairport were brilliant and Richard Thompson is still writing excellent songs. I saw him a few years ago in Manchester. Marvellous. If he comes over again and you get the chance to see him, do.

Graeme Lynch - Aberdeen
A real song in a top 100 - what's going on?! A descriptive song of loss - anyone over 5 years old has been there at some time or another. Simply stark and beautiful.

John, Oldbury
A few special songs possess an aura that changed whatever mood you were in when you first heard them. Fewer still retain the emotional intensity to change your mood no matter how many times you hear them. This is definitely one of those songs.

Phil Hardwick/Lausanne
When a song from the sixties stays up amongst the favourites, you know its got something special. As a long time folk fan, "meet on the ledge" was a backdrop to our adolescence and Cropredy wouldn't be the same without it. In these days of soundbites and plastic bands we need more Richard Thompsons

Grahame Morrison in Godalming
This is one the three songs I want played at my funeral.

Chris, Coventry
This is surely the saddest song ever written - yet holding out hope that I will go to meet my friends one day. I cry every time I hear it.

More songs.
