No matter how many times I hear this beautiful song, I never tire of it: haunting melody, lovely arrangement, fierce passion, and the incredible voice of Justin Hayward. One of the truly great rock songs, it should be in the top 10! The Moodies have so many great songs: The Voice, Watching and Waiting, Gypsy, Eternity Road, The Story in Your Eyes, Lost in a Lost World, I Know You're Out There Somewhere, Your Wildest Dreams, Question, I could go on and on. I like all their albums, but their first 7 are so good and unlike anyone else's that they put the band in a class by itself. It's a shame the group and Justin himself are so underrated. Theirs is music to love your whole life.

I first heard NIWS at the end of '67 when it was released and instantly fell in love with the tune, the lyrics, the haunting voice of JH, the composer and the overall sound, which was (and still is) unique and utterly beautiful! I've been a firm fan ever since. It is indeed what inspired me to become a professional musician myself - what larger influence can any one song have had on a human being? Now I'm turned 50 yrs old, this one song remains again unique in my affections and the reason I remain totally spellbound by music and continue to perform (more than ever). NIWS continues to sound as fresh and vital today when performed live by the MBs as it did back in '67. As a work of art (which it surely is) it certainly deserves to be up there as one of the greatest romantic songs ever witten. Humans recognise true love when they hear it.

The whole of the song, the music and the lyrics of 'nights in white satin' are so evocative. There is an instrumental version by James Last (yes - James Last) that is faithful to the original, whne i heard this I had to dig out the original by the Moody Blues. The Moody Blues songs live in your mind forever - try also 'you can never go home' from the album 'very good boy deserves favour'.

Just one of the many outstanding songs from brilliant singer/songwriter Justin Hayward. Though I love this beautifully haunting and timeless song, I do not believe it was or is Haywards best moment. He has continued to write many fine songs over the years that just do not get any air play! 'Nights' will always remain a classic and hayward was so young when he wrote it! For those of us old enough to remember it being released, you will recall NO ONE had anything that sounded remotely like this song or the album at that time. I would also argue as far as i can remember 'Days of Future Past' was the first true concept album. Simply "the day in the life of a person". Although St Pepper is often touted with first concept album, honour, it was never a concept album. The songs are not interelated to tell a story or give us a conceptual theme. It may have started out to be but did not end up having a concept to it.A Brilliant watershed in music? Yes! A concept album? No!. To me The Moody Blues have always gone widely unrecognised for their achievements and contribution to popular music and definately deserve wider recognotion an to be up their with The Beatles The Stones Pink Floyd Yes etc as a band that brought about change and experimentation in music. 'Nights' might be their signature song, but as a group and soloists, The Moody Blues achieved far far more. Regards Kevin

As much as "Nights..." is heralded as a classic (a belief which I do not dispute), what makes it so memorable bubbles through their "Classic 7" albums and then some. True, "Nights..." was the first to appear once the classic Mark II lineup gathered their forces and entered their golden years. But there are many joys to be found from "Days of Future Passed" to "Seventh Sojourn" that show the evolving conscience of the group. One could limit the discussion to straight-forward love songs, but that would be missing the point of what the Moodies' music has come to mean. For every "For My Lady" and "Never Comes the Day" are several excellent songs that talk of topics encompassing the mindset of the youth leaving the flowered '60s only to be faced with the bleak picture painted for them in the '70s. Songs of desperation ("Question", "Gypsy", "The Story in Your Eyes", "Lost in a Lost World", "You Can Never Go 主播大秀", "Our Guessing Game") mingle with songs of hope ("Emily's Song", "Dawning is the Day", "Candle of Life", "When You're a Free Man"). I could babble on for pages and feel like I keep missing the point I try to make. Personally, my faves rotate around "Watching and Waiting", "Visions of Paradise", "Dawning is the Day", and the "Have You Heard" suite. And, contrary to popular logic, the Moodies are still strong, as evidenced by their return to (modern) form on the "Strange Times" album. For those who wish to hear more of the Moodies' magic, here's one who feels you can't go wrong with the Classic 7 albums (from "Days of Future Passed" to "Seventh Sojourn").

Nights In White Satin is a classic. A beautiful song, sung with passion. Who could not be swept away by the combination of the lyrics, the music and the haunting voice of Justin Hayward? Is it the finest record the Moodies ever made? I love it, but I would be hard pressed to say it is my favourite. It would be impossible for me to choose just one. The Moodies have written, and still are recording beautiful music that really strikes a chord with the human soul. The Moody Blues have remained top of my list since '67. My respect for them has increased over the years. As a solo performer, Justin Hayward can come out on stage and hold an audience spellbound, just him and his guitar!!! He is a writer of many wonderful songs apart from "Nights" e.g. Tuesday Afternoon, New Horizons, Dawning Is The Day, The Voice, Broken Dreams and December, to name a few. He deserves a higher profile in the ranks of British songwriters and to be remembered for more than just NIWS. It would be nice to hear The Moodies and Justin's solo stuff get more air play.

Nights in White Satin is a beautiful song. We enjoy hearing it every time we see the Moodies in concert. The Moodies have so many wonderful songs that don't get the airplay they should. The band still tours and have so many fans. I think Nights is so memorable because you remember where you were when you first heard it and how much it touched your heart upon hearing it. "I Know You're Out There Somewhere", "The Actor", "New Horizons", etc, they have so many other songs that are certainly worth a listen!

Nights In White Satin is unquestionably one of the all time greats of rock and roll, there is nothing else quite like it still. But, there is not another band quite like The Moody Blues either. Their sound is Unique and Timeless, enlightening and uplifting food for the soul. While 'Nights' is an amazing love song, imho, Bless The Wings is THE definitive love song.. of all time. Doubt it? Give the lyrics another listen, eh? The unitiated may wonder..what magic do the Moodies possess to keep audiences enthralled and clamoring for more this far down the road? Unlike many forgetable bands that come and go like the next bright and shiney object, None of The Moody Blues music has ever been just a compilation of trendy noises. Every song has something to impart to the listener and this is precisly why they keep on a rockin'.. No one goes to a Moody concert and comes away empty. "Show me the Love" ..They do, and they do it Well. An audience feels pretty darn special at a Moodies Concert. No matter what your age Moody Blues music will take you on a magnificent rollercoaster ride of emotion and Wonder. Nights in White Satin is the signature song of the Moody Blues. It is of course deserving of such an honor. It has all the the things that signature songs have including a history of being misunderstood. Many people have the wrong kind of "Knights" in mind. Having said that the Moodys have many other great songs written by Justin, John, Ray, Graeme and Mike Pinder. To Our Children's Children's Children is the pinnacle of the Moody's sound, and in my opinion Watching and Waiting is their best song. But on the other hand it is hard to imagine W&W as a signature song since it is not a love song or as anthemic as NIWS. Saying it with Love. DH

This song has been a part of my life since I first heard it over 30 years ago. I've been blessed to see the Moody Blues live about 30 times as well, and the band and Justin Hayward are still bringing the house down when they perform Nights on stage all these many years later. Only Justin could deliver such a simple phrase as "I love you" with such power and heartfelt meaning! There are so many wonderful songs that the Moodies have recorded and that Justin has written throughout the years. Fans of good music should check out any of the band's Greatest Hits collections because they, in turn, will have you want to hear more of their wonderful music, and lead you to any one of their many brilliant albums! May they never find that Lost Chord!

The song that opened my ears to the Moodies in the early 1980's...In 2006 I will celebrate twenty years of pilgrimiges to see the band in concert at least once a year. What a difference (and joy!) their music has made in my life. I'm sure that Graeme Edge never thought he'd be uttering "senior citizens wish they were young" entering those golden years himself. I would take up pages here if given the chance!

The First time I heard Nights I was 13 years old. The lush orchestration was very unusual (for AM radio) as was the spoken verse at the end, but it was the butter-smooth and emotion filled voice of Justin Hayward that held me in rapt attention! This was the first Moodies (MkII) song I heard at age 12 or 13. I'm now 50 and it still moves me deeply. I agree with M J Williams of San Diego who said that if it doesn't move you, you are not of this earth. I believe its success is due primarily to the fact that it is written from the heart; it documents very real life experiences so similar to those which many people endure. I've followed the Moodies ever since those early days; their love for what they do, their genuine regard for each other, and the pleasure they get from watching others enjoy their music, all contribute to their deserved success. I'll be 'keeping the faith' for as long as 'I am'.

I don't know if Night's is the finest song the Moody's ever made because they have written so many good songs I would be hard pressed to say which one is the finest. What makes Night's so memorable though is the message of the song and the fact that no other singer ever has sung the words, I love you, Oh, How I love you, like Justin Hayward. In the 60's and 70's you couldn't turn on the radio without hearing it and so it is burnt into my memory forever. It will be a sad day when they stop singing it live. I hope the Moody's tour forever. All Moody Blues music is worth a listen.

Yes, Nights in White Satin is one of the Moody Blues finest, I remember back in 1977 when I first heard it. I could see in my mind a fine looking man on a horse dressed in white Satin, letters never ment to send. What a visual that was! Are you sitting comforably is another wonderful Moody Blues song. I always listen to this song with my eyes closed..letting Justin's voice wash over me....letting me know all will be all right. Thanks for letting me relive that time:o)

Is this the finest record they ever recorded.. I wouldn't say the finest but definitely one of their best. They have such a large repertoire that picking one 'finest' is difficult. What makes this song memorable is the layering of instrumental parts and the haunting vocals. I remember listening to this as a young girl and thinking when I grew up and met someone, he would say 'I love you' just like Hayward sang in this song. There are treasures on any of the Moody's released works but the first 7 are worth listening to over and over in entirety. It's a shame that radio formatting today prevents the playing of these recordings. There was a station that used to play an entire album as a tribute to a band. It would be nice to hear the Moody Blues this way. All-around sound with their early music .. there's nothing like it on the market today.

Nights is memorable to me from the 60s because it was the first "long" song I really listened to on the radio. It had everyone's attentions here in the states. The Moody Blues are by far my favorite band. The songs that really gets to me in concert are: Never Comes the Day, The Actor, Are you Sitting Comfortably, and Driftwood, in addition to Nights.

Not to mention being a great songwriter and to think he wrote this song while he was only 19. a tremendous legacy to his greatness. It is not my favorite moody song but it is probably the greatest Moody song as like Stairway to heaven it is a fantastic signature song for the band.

NIWS probably is the Moody Blues most memorable, but possibly not the finest. The MB's have a large library of very fine songs including Tuesday Afternoon, Ride my Seesaw, I'm Just a Singer (in a Rock and Roll Band), Lovely to See You, Gemini Dream, In your Wildest Dreams.... The list goes on and on. It's very difficult to pick out their "finest song" since there are just too many to choose from. But yes, NIWS is the one they are known for and most associated with. And to consider that it is 40 + - years old and was written when Justin Hayward was only 19 years old is just phenominal. If you were a child of the sixties as I was, just sitting down with any one of their 7 early albums will transport you right back to that idyllic time. Not a bad feeling. Deb Harrington

I'm 17 and went to see the Moody Blues in October 2004 live in the Apollo, Manchester. They were great and the hushed reverence that fell over the audience when the first notes were played was amazing, they actually stood like a national anthem. A great romantic track - a popular slow dance track at discos - the voice of Justin Hayward and a superb flute solo are some of the reasons why we all loved 'Nights in White Satin. It came from 'Days of Future Passed' - the first of 7 superb albums by the Moodies. They continue recording and performing now, and although there is some excellent material after the Seventh Sojourn album, both as a group and individually ('Driftwood on the Octave album is a great'), the band were at their very peak for the first 7 albums when Mike Pinder was a key part of the group. What an atmosphere on 'Lost In a Lost World' and 'When You're a Free Man' The Moody Blues have recorded so many great tracks that so few people have heard, since the 主播大秀 in those days had restricted time to play music (finished at about 6pm) and didn't play long tracks, there was no FM radio. Also the music that got played had to be short and highly commercial. So singles like Middle of the Road's Chirpey Chirpey Cheep Cheep is what the masses were fed. The Moodies were before their time and like Pink Floyd, pioneered innovative album music for you to really listen to. Eternity Road and Gypsy on 'To Our Children's Children's Children' if released as singles 5 years later would have been massive hits. Why does so much good music get spoilt or overlooked? - the superb 'Question' was kept off number one by the England World Cup Football Team trying to sing ('Back 主播大秀'). It had to be cut so short when released as a single that it didn't do it justice. Just like Al Stewart's 'Year of the Cat' which also had so much good stuff cut out. Thank god when Bohemian Rhapsody made it to the top, there was finally the realisation that a song can last longer than two and a half minutes.

As 90% of the moody blues songs are classics in their own right,it is very difficult to pick just one above any other but i think for romanticism and lyrical content,you would be hard pushed to better 'Dawn' from days of future passed.A good example of this is....the smell of grass just makes you pass into a dream (reminding me of a long lost summer i once had,funnily enough with a girl called Dawn!)
