THE PIANIST
The Pianist is the story of a Polish Jew who survived the Warsaw ghetto thanks, in part, to his brilliance as a musician. The film is adapted by Ronald Harwood from the autobiography of Wladyslaw Szpilman and directed by Roman Polanski. Polanski made a narrow escape from the ghetto himself, shoved through a hole in the wall by his father at the last minute. He explains why he finally decided to confront the subject of the Holocaust, whilst Ronald Harwood talks about how he found this film difficult to write.
DIVINE INTERVENTION.
Divine Intervention is a聽comedy聽about contemporary Palestinian life under Israeli rule. It's written, directed by and stars Palestinian filmmaker Elia Suleiman and won the Jury prize at last year's Cannes Film Festival. Suleiman talks to Joe Cornish聽 about what it was like to try and make a film in the middle of a military conflict.聽
FOREIGN FILM GUIDE
"The Man Without a Past" is the latest film from director Aki Kaurasmaki. He described his most popular film, 'Leningrad Cowboys Go America', as the worst film in the history of cinema. He thinks no film should be longer than ninety minutes and likes to cast his dog.聽 Antonia Quirke reveals more about this Finnish director.
