An image of a factory belching smoke into the environment.
Industry needs to change to save our future

In this week's programme...

Smoke Gets in your Eyes

Europe's companies face big fines from the EU over excess emissions from the start of 2005, but few British businesses seem prepared. It will only work if emissions are traded, but how does that work?

It is all part of an attempt to reduce global warming. Some people European Union Emissions Trading Scheme (EU-ETS) say it is the biggest piece of environmental legislation in human history. Others say it does not go far enough and it is another chance for the men in red braces in the city make money from a new matter of global certain.

Climate change is being accelerated as a consequence of man made activity and the EU-ETS is the first attempt to meet the commitments of the Kyoto Protocol. As soon trading really starts in January 2005 there will be a new indicator flashing away on the trading screens and the financial pages every day of the week.

For the first time carbon will be given a value and will start to appear on company balance sheets. It will affect the bottom line and business will never be the same again. Peter Day finds out what it means for all of us.
