What's so good about specialist schools? Tuesday 27 January 2004
Image: Teacher and pupil
The latest batch of specialist schools - including the first music and humanities schools is announced later this week. As their recently-released exam results seem to be outshining others, is it time to embrace the notion of specialism at secondary level?

Or is there still an argument for keeping education general while young people go through the fluctuations of their teenage years and tastes? And what if your local school is a Music College but you're a budding Paula Radcliffe or Tracey Emin?
Reporter Kate Weidmann talks to Akua Boateng, a pupil at St Cecilia's Church of England secondary school which has an emphasis on teaching music.
Jenni is then joined by Margaret Tulloch of CASE (Campaign for State Education) and David Miliband MP, Minister for Schools Standards to discuss the pros and cons of specialist schools.
