Tackling school expulsions
School expulsionsÌýare atÌýtheir highest for five years – and in Glasgow plans are afoot to do something about it.
‘Nurture groups’ are increasingly popular in primary schools. Their aim is to nip disruptive behaviour in the bud, before suspension becomes a real prospect for the child.
They’re small classes for children who need more teacher attention than can be provided in the mainstream. Glasgow City council has just agreed to roll out its nurture class initiative to 58 of its primary schools after a successful 5 year pilot scheme.
Another school seeing the benefits is Bede Community High School in Gateshead. Anne Kostalas went along to meet children, teachers and parents.Ìý
