Snow Day!

I always wake up to Radio Orkney, even tho I've lived in Shetland now for years. Just as weel, cos one o the first things they said wis that all the schools in Orkney were open (apart fae North Walls-the bairns in Hoy wid be delighted), and that ALL Shetland schools were SHUT! Of coorse, my bairns were up oot o their beds afore you could say 'snowman' and puttin 3 of everythin on. Typical, it taks them aboot half an hour to surface normally.
Here's a few pics o them oot in the snow.

The giant snowball is the bottom part o a snowman, but it got so cold that they had to leave it headless! If they finish it I'll post a pic.

Isn't there a rule about staying off the grass? There's that cute dog again. We don't speak of the day that all Orcadian Schools were open (except Hoy).

My kids very green with envy. Not a drop of snow down here in sunny Lancashire - just lots of blue skies and sunshine, but very cold.

Ah, but we frequently speak of the day that all the Orkney schools were open, except, Hoy - usually in the same senetence as the words Herman, mad, and laughed until my sides were sore!

The empress of Lancashire has been complaining of the blinding sun cold in da red rose county. Then again she found Magnolia Towers cold in October. Never fear Pendle will soon be covered with a little dusting of snow. Enough to make an egg cup sized Henry.

Herman from Orkney

Talking about cold. I read a report the other day which said that the gulf stream is slowing down and that temperatures in Britain could drop by around 4 degrees C over the next decade. If it carries on I'll be able to drive all the way to Unst and won't need to bother spending x amounts on Northlink. Will just have to spend x amounts on that 4x4 instead!

Another ice age in the offing? Whatever happened to global warming? By the way, in the States, schools have to be functioning a minimum of days a year (some padding is included in the yearly schedule). If the schools in Shetland/Orkney are closed as much as they did just recently, do schools have to make up (extend the academic year)?

mjc from NM,USA

Mjc - great idea. That way I'd get to mention the words puffinbilly, mad, sad, laugh until my sides were sore. In fact I could do it from outside his classroom window as I'd have 2 days more holiday.

Herman from Orkney

If the gulf stream stops it will be cause by global warming... dreaming of snow... but not ice ages x
