When the boat comes in......

This will sound like a joke:

3 bloggers went to the beach one day and saw a fish......

What is this fish?
Is it a rare prehistoric species?
Is it a Teenage Mutant Ninja Fish?

What type of fish is it? We've asked people, sent photos away & sent emails. No-one is certain but we think we might know but....

Please, please, please can someone out there give us the definitive answer. It was found after a few days of gales at Norwick in Unst.

Suggestions please.

True teamwork this: Damadcoo took some pics, Ruthodanort took most pics & poor old Muness stood almost knee deep in the North Sea to get water to wash the fish for it's publicity shots!

(PS Before anyone says it: this fish was not in the can. Really it WAS pears.)

It's a rare beastie indeed but the red colouration suggests that it might be one of Calumannabel's red herrings wearing a crash helmet.

Annie B from the usual

is it a monkfish?

scallowawife from deep in a factual book on sea creatues

The large eyes suggest something that swims very deep. The bright colouring suggest something that swims in tropical waters. Wouldn't fancy it in batter.

calumannabel from lewis

john dory???

carol from france

It looks a little like a Blenny but i cant be sure. maybe it is one of the newly found unknown species found in the antartic trying to escape from the microscope

Barebraes from Shapinsay

I asked my eminent leader aboot the fish, and he told me it was a p..... Sorry, I think it begins with a p but it's gone already. Will ask again damorn. Am I havin a TWS moment here?

Ruthodanort from Unst

Plucker!!!!!

Ruthodanort from Unst

hope not

carol from france, but maybe should change

Pheasant variety? Or his son....

Flying Cat from busy hanging kippers

i wondered about a plucker but was scared to mention it in case TWS rhymed it and DS accused me of smut. Was a plucker the one you could put a cigarette in its mouth and it smoked it?

scallowawife from still reading up on sea creatures

I'm not a pheasant plucker, I'm a pheasant pluckers mate, I'm only plucking pheasants 'cause the pheasant pluckers late. Watch how you say this.....

Tws from Nothingfishyhere

My learned colleagues who know these things say its a scorpion fish / sea scorpion...... Myxocephalus scorpius or Taurulus bubalis which come in a wide range of colours if you google for images of the species

Bunchrew Seer from GGH Traffic Isle

We've been told that fishermen call them bridesmaids & its male.

Muness from Fetlar

Fishermen, especially the going-away-for-a-long-time-variety, were notorious for their ability to see female forms in all sorts of wierd creatures, but this takes a bit of believing. At least a dugong vaguely resembles a human.....

Flying Cat from a knowing look

So FC reckons dugongs vaguely resemble humans. Maybe Annie's Murdo John is trying to reverse the process or,perhaps, he's found one and thinks he's on a promise.

Hyper-Borean from A sirenian suit

Tried both the Myxocephalus scorpius and Taurulus bubalis on Google & our fish looked a bit like it (but we're not convinced)

Muness from Fetlar

Tauralis bubalis on google, is that anything like sardines on toast?

Hyper-Borean from The kitchen

what wonderful photos!!!!! Did you say it was yourself that took them? You must be so proud!!!

Anonymous from in awe

Obviously it's straight A's to the pretty exciting photographer....
