Who isnt sick ?

We're just coming out of a period of time where eveyone has been sick, kids sick, parents sick, siblings sick, it felt as though the world had the flu at one point. God i am knackered & crave a nights sleep where im not woken up by someone asking for a drink or the phone ringing !

Things are starting to look up a little here, the ground is showing signs of drying out, dare I even start to believe I may get the ploughing done next month..

Ive been inundated with calls from shops on the mainland asking if i can supply them with free range eggs & as a result we are going to build our layers flock up to 100 birds over the next year, to start supplying late august with a contract that increases to 600 eggs per week in march 2009, tisnt to be sniffed at when its regular income & the proverbial foot in the door so to speak.

On the subject of birds, yesterday was day 19 for the first batch in the incubator, they were moved to the hatcher in the morning & by lunchtime we had signs of life soon to exit the confines of the egg, holding an egg which is still intact yet can be clearly heard to be cheaping never ceases to enthrall me. Big kid at heart.

Well done with the egg plans! Back in the old times, the bartering and money got from eggs was known as 'living at the hen's erse' - an enduring image, don't you think?

My Tai Chi class has been cancelled tonight because my tutor was too ill to teach it ... :-( I wasn;t too disappointed, as I didn;t feel too well myself ...!

Yum yum nothing better than a good egg! I hope that the hotels of Shetland are snapping at your heals for your organic produce too. The rare occasion this past weekend when I had breakfast it was a bacon from Unst pig's, sassermet from Yell and of course a fine egg - it was from Nesting though. The hotels in Shetland could easily be selling a fine breakfast of Shetland produce.

I do agree ! The shetland hotels & eatiers could put on a wonderful array of local produce, its not as if there isnt enough of it available, heck even I'd eat out when I visit lerwick if I knew I was going to be eating local produce rather than mass produced rubbish that comes up from south.

What breed, FI? Pure bred or hybrid layers? You must have quite a large incubator with all the automatic controls. Was it a logistical nightmare to get all the fertillized eggs to you intact and in a timely manner? Good luck, by the way!

Mjc... These are 2nd generation of my own creations... mix 1 is top secret for anther 2 yrs, need to do some back mating to fix traits into the breed.. Mix 2, borrows the genetics of the shetland hens green egg laying capabilities with a good sprinkling of *being able to lay far more*

"shetland hens GREEN egg laying" - am I reading right, Angela? Green eggs? speckled? how large? Just curious. # I heard of this high school girl who sold fresh eggs at a premium, with a long wait list, because she would always include an unusual colored/speckled egg in the dozen. People would buy the dozen eggs often just for the pleasure of discovering the special one.
