As part of the 主播大秀 Voices project, 主播大秀 Somerset Sound's John Burgess caught up with a group of people from Exmoor to find out about how they speak, the language they use, and the words which are peculiar to this part of the world.

Norma Huxtable

Norma Huxtable
Norma was born and bred on Exmoor

Norma is a retired farmer's wife who was born and bred on Exmoor.

One of the characters of the area, she's also a well-known writer of humorous tales about local people and Exmoor life.

John Fulford-Williams

John Fulford-Williams
John lives on the edge of the moor

John came to live on Exmoor many years ago. He's a trained boat builder and has even built his own yacht!

He now makes wooden cases for large church organs. He has also farmed, and now lives on the edge of the moor at South Molton.

Angela Balsom

Angela Balsom
Angela paints scenery for The Dulverton Players

Originally from Gloucester, Angela came to live in Dulverton when she was young. She married the son of local baker and confectioner, and worked in the business until it closed several years ago.

Angela is now a talented artist who also paints the scenery for stage productions by the amateur dramatic society The Dulverton Players.

Paul Chanter

Paul Chanter
Paul is a well-known character on Exmoor

Paul is a very well-known and much-liked character on Exmoor. He used to run a riding school and he now rides with the hunt.

Many people in the area remember him for his boisterous portrayal of the villain Carver Doone at the Dulverton Festival.

The local players were enacting the Lorna Doone story, and Paul as Carver galloped into the arena on his horse, swept Lorna into his arms and galloped off at some speed, much to the surprise of everyone watching!

Teresa Williams

Teresa Williams
Teresa is heavily involved in the Exmoor community

Teresa came to Dulverton with her family as a child. Her father was the local policeman.

She is now married to the local postman and is very involved and active in the community.

A school governor and chair of the Dulverton Playground Committee, Teresa was instrumental in helping to raise over 拢40,000 to provide a new playground for local children.

Marion Silverlock

Marion Silverlock
Marion founded the annual Dulverton Festival

Marion moved from London to Exmoor about 30 years ago and immediately fell in love with Dulverton where she and her husband Les have lived ever since.

Their main activity has been in education, youth and community work, but they are now running their own business as management consultants.

Marion is involved in much of the social and cultural activities in the town. She founded the annual Dulverton Festival and helped to design The Trim Trail, a novel idea she first discovered in Germany where certain exercise facilities are available for the entire community.
