The Stalls at Tilham Farm

From Cow Stalls to Concert Hall

Concerts, plays, and art exhibitions are just some of the activites Baltonsborough residents Robert and Sue Peto host in what used to be a cattle home.

In the beautiful setting of Tilham Farm in Baltonsborough near Glastonbury, there lies a building whose transformation couldn't be more extreme. Having served for years as cattle stalls on a working farm, the space is now used for a multitude of performing arts and other creative activities.

"I'm not a reclusive person, I love having people here, young people especially."

Sue Peto, Stalls owner

As one of many old farm buildings, the cattle stalls stood out as it was made of stone, despite being rather run-down. The building was at first touted as a fine place for a much more leisurely activity.

"My husband and my sons earmarked it as a good place for a pool table. My background is in theatre and my son is a visual artist so we thought we'd just keep it as a sort of family party room or happening space," said owner Sue Peto.

The Stalls "happening space"

Without any specific use, renovation took place and after advice from a local expert, the building's own electricity supply was installed. To christen the building the Petos' opted for a low-key affair.

"Our friends perform cabaret. They're very talented and suggested we put on a show," said Sue. "We invited family and friends and for three nights put on a show which was attended by about 70 people each night."

It was such a success that a substantial amount of money was raised for local charities as well as providing a platform for future events at the newly christened "Stalls."

As well as performances, the space is now used as a base for the local male choir, visual art and exhibitions, and even pilates.

Gradually more features have been added

"Gradually, as more events happen you think 'ok we need more lights, or more gels, or a smoke machine,' and gradually you accumulate more stuff."

The Stalls now have a PA system, electronic lighting rig, and even metal racks for hanging paintings.

So with all these people marching round her house, does Sue not find her privacy is invaded?

"I'm not a reclusive person, I love having people here, young people especially. The local school put on a version of Macbeth recently and it just gave me such pleasure. Everyone has their own tastes."

You can see the Stalls for yourself during the Baltonsborough festival which runs from June 7- 15.听
