I worked at Jessops Hospital initially in Gynaecology as SRN 1972 and then completing my midwifery training in 1973-75 I had my first child born there in 1979 and I later returned to work night duty on the gynae and post natal wards in the early 80'sI have many happy memories both professionally and as a patient I have travelled to the other side of the world and have yet to come across another such hospital that provides the specialist care and amenities for both gynaecology and obstetric care as was provided at Jessops hospital.Both my gynae and midwifery training were second to none and I wish I could relive those special days with special friends and colleagues and mentors in the nursing and medical profession,I was very sad to come across this site today during browsing

I worked at The old Jessop Hospital on the Special Care Baby Unit from july 1987 untill it closed on feb 3rd 2001 and now work at the new Jessop wing. The new hospital is very modern with up to date equipment which is great for the women and babies of Sheffield, but the atmosphere is not quite the same. I miss the old jessop hospital very much and all the staff that have now left and retired

My daughter was born in Jessops in April 1974 and I stayed for 1 week as she needed special care. It was a complicated delivery and the consultant, Mr.Smith, ante-natal doctor and special baby care doctor were all present, and a sister and 2 midwives. I cannot praise the hospital enough for the excellent care my baby and I received. My room faced the church across the road and I remember the clock chiming throughout the night. I now live in Cheshire but will always have fond memories of Jessops.

I was born there on 14th March 1945,the first one out of six ,Myself, Paul, Patrick, Elizabeth, Eric, and John,my eldest brother Malcolm was the only one in the family not to be born at Jessops. as a matter of interest he visited the site on the last day of demolition and aked the forman on site if he could have the last brick to be removed as a keepsake he was given a full brick and a half, he will retain the full one till he death then it will be passed on, the other half i have cut into six pieces and will be given to other siblings at a party to be held next weekend in wales where the whole family will attend, the family has now extended to approx 54 including wives, partners, children, and grandchildren.

I was born there in 1947, my Mother worked at Viners and would pick me up from my Grandmother's house on Fawcett St, we walked past the Hospital every night on our way to the tram, I don't think a day went by when I didn't ask her which room was I born in.Mother died this year aged 90.

My daughter was born on Landing 1A in November 1967. I must say the staff there were wonderful. I had a difficult time and there were 3 doctors and 5 nursing staff there at the time and I was asked whether I minded the student doctors being there. I was in no state to mind - I was just glad they were there to help.

I moved to Sheffield 2 weeks before my daughter was born in September 1997. Although the staff were wonderful the building was falling down then and I couldn't get out quick enough as I was kept awake all night by the "ladies of the night" touting their trade. I am saddened by all the comments from people who don't want to see it knocked down - it isn't all being knocked down, it isn't all going. The oldest listed building is being refurbished and will be well looked after - you can't say the same for the bit they have knocked down.

I was born at the JHW in 1955 and so were my 3 daughter's, 1975,77 and 79.I hope my girls' will be able to have their babies' at Jessop.Recently I have had treatment in the new Jessop Wing at RHH and must say the staff at both the old Jessop and the new are wonderful.

its sad to see that the old jessops is going. i was born there nearly 21 years ago and my brother was born there nearly 17 years ago. it looks haunted but to many people it will bring back a lot of memorys

I had all three of my daughters there in '88, '91 and '98. I was searching the place where my youngest was born for a project she is doing at school. I was very shocked when I saw the old hospital being pulled down. It made me feel very sad and brought a tear to my eye. We now live in New Zealand so the next time I see it it will probably be something else. My girls were all very proud to have been born there.

The are not actually demolishing the old jessops just the new extensions which are rather grotty, they are leaving the old 1880 part and it will look lovely when it has all been refurbished.

They are not knocking down JESSOPS Just the new bit that was added the 1880's bit is going to be cleaned up and will house the Music Department, a new building will be built between Old Jessops and the dual carriage way.

My three eldest children were all born at Jessops between 1994 and 1998 and while it is sad to see it go as it is a part of their history, my last experience of child birth at the Jessop Wing was a much more pleasant experience.

Oh my goodness...I was born there in 1960 and just saw this picture from my sunny balcony in Australia where I now live...It made me very sad to see it is being demolished and brought back some happy memories of living in Sheffield for over 40 yrs. It was always a hive of activity around the hospital and it makes you wonder where all those people are now.

My boy & girl twins were born on Feb 15th 1973. I was in for a total of 5 weeks, on landing 1, and met a few ladies in waiting. Christine and Bridget are two I can remember. One incedent we thought was hilarious was when a patient slipped out with the last of the visitors, and I saw her return about 10pm. Sister never knew but some of the nurses did! I also had my first son in Jessops in Aug1970. The staff and doctors then and in 73 were WONDERFUL. Thank You All

Yes, I was born at Jessops, back in April 1969. I have only just seen this news and the photo has brought a tear to my eye! I am very sentimental about my home city and this is indeed very, very sad for me. Like much of Sheffield - why do they have to change things? Memories just simply vanish and it tears at my heart-strings. I'm gutted!

I was born in Jessops in 1960. I was supposed to be a home birth but after some problems an ambulance was called to take my Mum to hospital. There was a lot of snow and Dad had to get out to push to ambulance up Netherthorpe Road. He says I've always been a pain in the you know what!!

My Son was born there in '94. The place was looking a bit old and tired back then, but the midwives & nurses were brilliant. On my way to work I drove past and saw the delivery room where my son was born. It was half demolished off the side of the building. Sad to see it go but it heralds a new era for the ever burdgeoning building plans for Sheffield!

Both of my children were born there, in 1995 and 1998. I spent 6 weeks there in 1998 due to severe complications. I remember the 'girls' screaming down the street in the very early hours! I do have many memories of Jessops, in the main the superb care I received. Shame it is going but I guess that is the way of things. I now live in Brisbane where the weather is a tad warmer than Sheffield!

Sad to see another Sheffield landmark disappear, but it was time for the disused site to be re-developed for the good of the city. Anyone remember the main entrance featuring in the nuclear holocast film Threads?

L had both my babies at Jessops. The first in 1970 and the second in 1985. What I remember most is listening to the ladies of the night pedalling their wares just outside the hospital! It's sad to see the old place go even though I'm now 6000 miles away in Malaysia.

I now live in Hampshire but Anna is still in Sheffield.The hospital was old then but the care wonderful.My daughter Sarah who was living in Sheffield at that time became pregnet and because of passed medical history needed a course of injections which she attended Jessops this was in late 1999/2000.we now have a wonderful grandson Jack.
