Darling Buds

The Darling Buds

Last updated: 03 July 2009

Formed in Cardiff in 1986 by the 19-year-old Andrea Lewis, The Darling Buds were for six years one of the most promising acts coming out of the UK indie scene.

They took their name from the H. E. Bates novel The Darling Buds Of May, and swiftly released their debut single, If I Said, on their own label in February 1987.

Initial response to the single was good and the more established label Native re-released the track, garnering radio play from John Peel. Their music relied on a simple-but-effective writing style, combining pop hooks and vocal harmonies, which drew Sony to sign the band in 1988.
