St David's Peninsula

St David's walk

  • Location: St Davids to Whitesands
  • Distance: 5 miles
  • Time: Approx 3 hours
  • Description: A beautiful Pembrokeshire coastal walk from St David's to Whitesands beach.

The Pembrokeshire Coastal Path is a 186 mile long route around some of the most beguiling parts of West Wales.

This part of Pembrokeshire is one of the sunniest in Wales, with over 1800 hours of sunshine on average a year but as the coast is exposed, it can be windy at times.

The cliffs around St Justinian's however are sheltered from the worst of the wind by Ramsey Island.

This shelter encourages an array of flowers in spring, while the cliffs and waters also provide a variety of animal, bird and marine life.

Whilst Derek was there he was lucky to see a few seals as well as the odd porpoise feeding.

Ramsey Sound & The Bitches

There's an extreme force of the tides in Ramsey Sound and the Bitches rapids due to the meeting of the waters of the Irish Sea and St George's Channel so you get a strange mix of waves, whirlpools and eddies here.

Porth Clais harbour and Whitesands Bay are stunning. The latter is a great place for surfers and there's a nice café here too.

A big plus point to this walk is that you can leave your car at the visitor centre in St David's and then catch the coastal cruiser bus to be dropped off along the route.

If you get tired, just wait by the roadside and they'll come and pick you up. They'll even take your surfboard on board for you and visit many of the beaches in Pembrokeshire during the summer months.

Walking guide tips

Ian Meopham from the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park said: "This is world-class walking by any standards - particularly if the wildlife turn up: porpoise, seals, sea birds galore, ravens, maybe even sun fish. The flowers are more reliable, though.

April and May are best. It is so special that the whole walk is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, though you don't need to be a scientist to see that this place deserves special care.

"As to the wild majesty of this fantastic coastline - I will offer a money back guarantee.

"So come rain or shine, gale or fog (probably the lot if you take the whole day!) this is one walk that should linger for a long time in your memory.

"The growing problem around St David's during the holiday periods is of car parking and congestion, so please help by minimizing your car use - try the buses, or better still, cycle or walk wherever you can".
