Raise Your Game: What does the number one mechanic do?

Cheyne Bromfield: The number one mechanic generally knows most about the car. So I look after the car, make sure it runs safely and make sure everything works.

RYG: How important is your role in making sure that the car is ready to race?

CB: I do all the prep work in the workshop and onsite here at the race track. All the other mechanics come along and help on the race weekend.

RYG: Can you describe a typical race day?

CB: It's long! It starts anywhere from half five to six in the morning and can finish at midnight. It depends whether everything goes well or not.

RYG: How important is it to have that team around you?

CB: One of the most important things is to have a good relationship with all the people that you work with so that when something happens, such as a problem with the car, you know you don't have to say anything, they can just get on and get it done.

RYG: It's a big, loud environment, but communication is essential. How do you ensure that you get to communicate efficiently?

CB: A lot of the time we won't actually speak to each other because we'll know what's going on just through routine. However, we do use radio contact quite often if the engineer is telling us what's happening.

RYG: What would be your advice to young people looking to get involved in motorsport?

CB: Just have a good work ethic, work hard, work smart and it will show.
