Ships carrying emergency aid and medical teams have reached some of the worst-hit parts of the Indonesian island chain devastated by a tsunami on Monday.
A local official in the remote Mentawai islands, off western Sumatra, said houses and government offices had been completely destroyed.
More than 340 people are known to have died, with hundreds more missing.
