Create a new you and try a computer-generated hairstyle, find out why African–Caribbean people straighten their hair, hear local stories and much more at a free interactive hair exhibition at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.

Hair exhibition

Hair: 'Community Stories from Birmingham’ is a free exhibition at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery that explores the links between hair and cultural identity in the city over the past 50 years.

Artworks, objects and photographs are brought to life by people’s stories from across Birmingham.

Hair and our identity

The interactive exhibition showing from 25 July 2008 until 1 March 2009, will explore Asian, African-Caribbean and punk rock hairstyles, in an exciting programme of events including talks and interactive family activities.

Family fun summer workshops

During the summer holidays the exhibition will be accompanied by an exciting programme of free drop-in family fun workshops every Tuesday and Thursday 11am – 4pm. See a full calendar of events below:

Explore stories surrounding hair and create a hair-tastic collage.

Make a three dimensional hairstyle to take away with you

Create your own puppet characters with funky haircuts.

Personalise a mask with a carnival hairstyle.

Dr Shirley Anne Tate will explore African-Caribbean beauty and the natural/unnatural hair debate

Be a King or Queen for a day! Decorate a wire crown with beads and basic wirework.

Thursday 14th August – Hair crazy

Create a new you! Try on different wigs or have your hair restyled in a past fashion.

Create your own decorative hair accessories using handmade felt and beads.

Thursday 21st August – Wonder-band

Design you own alice or karate band.

Ulfah Arts looks at hair from a muslim woman’s perspective and explores why some of these women choose to wear the hijaab.

Photo days

On special photo days their will be an opportunity to add your own hairstyle photographs to the exhibition.
