5 live's Sony hopes

fingersforweb.jpg

The nominations for this year's were announced last night and they're really good news for 5 live and 5 live Sports Extra.

We've got nine nominations in total including one for what's often seen as the top award - Station of the Year. We're one of the three nominees alongside and . We've also been nominated in the Digital Station of the Year category where 5 live Sports Extra is against and .

These nominations really matter to us because Sony judges are a wide range of people who really know about radio. Ratings can tell us how many people are listening and for how long but it's wonderful to have the excellence of our output recognised by an independent judging panel. Our entries emphasised the importance of our audience in everything we do and how we are working to bring in new listeners.

Outstandingly there are three nominations for Victoria Derbyshire and her team. Victoria is nominated in the Speech Broadcaster of the Year category, for Interview of the Year (her interview with Peter Bacon) and as the best News and Current Affairs Programme.

5 live Breakfast with Nicky Campbell and Shelagh Fogarty is nominated once again in the Best Breakfast Programme category so has a chance to hold on to the award it won last year.

In sport, has picked up a nomination in the Best Live Event category for our Ashes coverage last summer and Sportsweek is nominated for Best Sports Programme.

Finally, Mark Kermode is nominated for the new Specialist Contributor of the Year award for his coverage of the world of movies for 5 live.

We'll find out the results on May 10th - but whatever happens on the night, we're very proud to have received these nominations.

Great news. Highlights for me would have to be Mark Kermode's recognition, Victoria Derbyshire's programme, and Breakfast; the former is unique in his style, and the latter are surely, along with Drive, the backbone of British daytime radio. As someone who listens to the station daily, sometimes for up to 18 hours a day whilst working, heartfelt congratulations, not just to the presenters involved but to all those behind the scenes whose names we never hear.

Goos grief - is Mr Webber on the payroll?

This is my post 170 from "Five Live's Controller on radio 4's Feedback:

"So there are 5 Live presenters and programmes featuring in the Sony nominations for this year's prize giving.

You nominate yourself, or your colleagues nominate you, and then all your old mates like Dotun, Anita, Moz Dee and Bob Shennan decide whether you are to be judged the best. I forgot, A V-K is also a judge.......................

Nothing like being a winner when you can't lose.

Radio Five Live is up for Station of the year. No doubt they will win, and how is not a mystery."

    Hello Mr Van-Klaveren,

Congratulations to the many presenters who have been nominated for the awards, it just goes to show how stronger 5live is getting,i am pleased that Test Match Special has been nominated i regulalry listen to TMS and the commentary is first class, as is the Sports commentary generally, which is imo world class.

Could you just clear 1 point up for me if you wouldnt mind, seeing as all the English clubs are out of the Champions League, will 5live be providing live commentary of the Semi Finals, Barca vs Inter is really a tasty match, if you not going to cover the Semis, could you explain why not?

Are you going to be covering the final live?

    Regards
    Fedster

I can't believe you're blowing your own trumpet again.
If 5live wins 'station of the year' then I'll eat my hat.Nothing would be more undeserved.
I don't listen anymore since you've totally dumbed down the programming and I'm sure I'm not alone.
I can't wait for you to be fired in a nutshell-That would be thoroughly deserved.

What a shame that on the day that marks 2 months since we were asked to give Mr Controller via "our blogs editor" (who seems MIA incidentally) a consolidated list of questions many of us here have been asking for since 20 November his intervention today is a puff piece about how good the station is, rather then answering the legitimate questions of listeners.

Oh, and I agree with Carrie, there are so many Ö÷²¥´óÐã names on the judging panel, people who have worked at the Ö÷²¥´óÐã, or who are beholding to the Ö÷²¥´óÐã for freelance work or contracts for programming it is very very far from an "independent" judging panel. Quite a partisan panel I'd say.

How Victoria Derbyshire stands was ever nominated for "Best News & Current Affairs Programme" is beyond me. Her programme is increasing the radio equivalent of Jeremy Kyle.

The nominations are made by the industry and the voting is done by a handful of industry luminaries, including more then four people directly associated with 5Live.

I write this as someone who has won an award at a national radio industry award show overseas.

If Talksport and Absolute Radio are 5Live's only competition for 'Station of the Year' it'd be pretty disastrous if you don't win it.

  • Comment number 8.

Who's turn is it to win something this time ?

I remember 6Music's George Lamb even got an award one year.

How did that happen I wonder ??

  • Comment number 9.

On this basis I do think Nicky Campbell is due some kind of award --

After years of looking-on, watching the fray
and diminution of this place - feel
I have to take issue with AvK - on his rare
and selective appearences, his hiding from the people
    that pay for this station.
The Sonys adhere themselves eventually to everyone,
and after the awards - all that will remain is a laughing-stock
    except on Sunday mornings.

  • Comment number 11.

Congratulations - all the nominations are well-deserved in my opinion. And, much as I love Planet Rock, I do hope Sports Extra picks up the digital award: over the past 12 months, I've thoroughly enjoyed the tennis commentaries from the US and Australia, the American football on Sunday nights, F1 and, of course, the golf. Sports Extra has become a really important part of my life, so I've got my fingers crossed for you!

So you've time to write a blog about this Adrian , but you still havn't answered our questions as was promised.

  • Comment number 13.

Curmy I believe the words were: "I'm planning to do a question-and-answer session on this blog early in the New Year, which should be another chance to put points to me directly." /blogs/5live/2009/11/answering-your-questions-about.shtml

Since then we've just had an unannounced appearance on Radio 4, a puff piece about the Sony awards, a sob piece about losing football rights, another propaganda piece about the ratings for Q4 2009 and an article about the since-delayed move to Salford.

  • Comment number 14.

Surprise surprise 5Live wins the Sony award for station of the year. These awards have lost all credibility now. 5Live has gone backwards massively in 2009/2010. No doubt Mr Controller will spring to the keyboard to right a nice propaganda piece in the morning.

"If 5live wins 'station of the year' then I'll eat my hat.Nothing would be more undeserved." -- Robbo, I hope you've got your hat handy!

  • Comment number 16.

Lol ryanw-I appear to have mislaid it !

This award is a total disgrace.

I switched the radio on for 2 minutes on Monday afternoon to hear Bacon say that his big guest of the day was Gordon Smart from 'The Sun's Bizzare Column'.
    Click-back to 6 music.

Hello - just popped back for a mo. I am sure the station will be happy to have won the station of the year and congratulations to all. Whatever some may feel, there are some fantastic moments on the station and I am sure a lot of hard work was rewarded last night.

I am still very concerned about some aspects of the changes, but do not post them here any more for various reasons. I have now started to send comments of praise where due to the individual programmes and complaints via the main complaints page of the BBc.

  • Comment number 18.

Can someone at 5Live post up the audio submission for the Sony awards entry. I would be _very_ interested to hear how that sounds compared with the station we know.

  • Comment number 19.

    It's as if Klav. knew

  • Comment number 20.

I don't feel I have anything to say about the awards apart from hmmmmmmm, and yes, some of the programmes on Five Live have helped it win the Station of the Year, but we all know who they aren't, so to speak.

  • Comment number 21.

    Well done 5Live

  • Comment number 22.

Please tell me we won't have to listen to that pre-news strap for the station ID for the whole of the next twelve months. Please.

  • Comment number 23.

From my perspective, I agree R5L has dumbed down this year... Simon Mayo leaving and being replaced by "celebrity"/self-obsessed Richard Bacon has no helped. And please can we drop those mindless jingles/ads which use up time, irritate and have no place on a (vaguely) serious station...I shall throw radio at wall next time I have to listen to drivel about elves, snowmen and/or Ashes clocks striking!
