Britain goes to the polls

Post categories:

James Bridgeman | 07:34 UK time, Thursday, 6 May 2010

After a month of talking about little else, it's almost time for us to put our election coverage on hold. While the polls are open, the 主播大秀's various outlets won't be covering any election-related issues. That includes our blogs. Here's the official line:

In line with the political parties and other UK broadcasters, the 主播大秀 will not be reporting the election campaign or offering discussion about the campaign while the polls are open on May 6th on any of its outlets. Our messageboards and many blogs will remain open on Polling Day, but we ask all users to refrain from discussing the election while the polls are open. Usual 主播大秀 House Rules will resume once the polls are closed after 10pm on May 6th. See the guide to the special election house rules for more information

That means we've had to close the comments sections on some of our election-related entries on this blog. But they'll re-open after the polls close at 10pm.

Thanks for your understanding and cooperation!

This comment was removed because the moderators found it broke the house rules. Explain.

  • Comment number 2.

Nick Vinehill, I've removed your comment about 5 live's election coverage. I'm being cautious in applying the polling day house rules. I'd suggest posting again once the polls are closed. In the meantime, I'm closing comments on this post.

Can anyone please tell me how to have a conversation about Radio 5?
It seems to me that every time I find an ongoing conversation whether it be a board or a blog it is closed down for what appears to be quite spurious reasons.
What on earth is the 主播大秀 frightened about?
This is a genuine enquiry as I would really like to air my views about what was once a wonderful station but hosts always seem to use the excuse of "off subject!"

I am NOT a new member!

arthur mee - have a look here, it might be of interest.

Thanks Zeldalicious, but the irony is that they seem to have closed that as well.
    Case rests!

  • Comment number 7.

Given that Facebook, Twitter, independant blogs and messageboards, etc. keep on banging away during polling it seems that closing 主播大秀 blogs is a bit like urinating into a gale in regard to the advance of technology. It could possibly be another case of the law not keeping up with times to an extent.

  • Comment number 8.

Sorry arthur - I didn't realise that they had closed that blog on Thursday 6th! It is getting beyond a joke on here.

  • Comment number 9.

arthur mee, the short answer is that there's currently nowhere at bbc.co.uk for general discussion of 5 live. The network's messageboard was closed at the end of last year (5 live Interactive Editor Brett Spencer explained the decision here on the blog).

Your options include this blog, where we try to keep up a steady flow of posts about big 5 live issues for discussion; 5 live Connect, where you can submit comments on the news topics being discussed on-air and the social networks (various 5 live programmes are on Facebook and the network has ).

That's a nowhere then Arthur because unless you want to post on "Britain goes to the polls" you will be off topic and then this blog will close down.

  • Comment number 11.

    Mr Bowbrick,
Where then can we discuss the daytime output of Radio 5 without you closing the blog ,thread etc, down?
Where can I comment on Richard Bacon devoting a very large proportion of his show today, Monday, to an "interview" with the celebrity editor of the Sun newspaper?
This was the afternoon that the future of our country was in the balance.
This was on the 主播大秀's NEWS station. It is quite absurd and someone must be held to account.
I think that I have remained on topic so please will you provide me with a satisfactory reply....and please don't patronise me with comments such as he deferred to "news" when anything important happened.

  • Comment number 12.

I doubt you will get an answer Arthur, but great question!

  • Comment number 13.

Not sure if this is the right place for this comment but can I express my pleasant surprise at how good Livesey was last night? In fact for the last two weeks he has been a very balanced and a very good interviewer, knowing when to shut up and knowing when to provoke. He has stopped talking about himself (pity his predecessor cannot manage this) and is doing well. Keep it up Sir!

  • Comment number 14.

Trifecta, you are right. Livesey has potential. I'm starting to think it is the trivial interventions of Rachel Hodges that are the problem. Call me old fashioned but I like a newsreader to read the news, not trival texts and tweets and banal facebook posts.

  • Comment number 15.

As the station has been broadcasting loads about the election debacle, is it too much to expect a blog on all that is going on?

And please could someone tell Gabby her programme is a programme, not a show.

  • Comment number 16.

Let鈥檚 see how quickly you close this one to comments.

What was that that AVK once said, 鈥5 Live is the most democratic radio station鈥

    Hmm............

  • Comment number 17.

Blimey closing down blogs left, right and centre here ! So the interaction that one caller on the VD show said that 5live was so good at doesn't apply to these blogs ? Absolutely shameful but a good point to add to the Trust survey.

  • Comment number 18.

They just don't get it do they Dom... it makes a mockery of the statement of this blog as Carrie's been saying "A blog where 5 live鈥檚 programme makers, interactive team, editors and senior managers talk about the station and respond to listeners." ... what a joke.

At least it's more evidence for a submission to the Trust on 5Live.

Meanwhile, some news which you'd think would warrant a post, but of course Twitter is the only place to find another out about the station these days.

George Riley is moving to breakfast.

Some news.Like Gabby I'm leaving the @bbc5live lunchtime show.I'm very excited to have been asked to join the 5live Breakfast team from June

A nice review of Shelagh's new programme from the Guardian in case you didnt see it a few days ago. She's made a really bright start and is such an improvement on Gabby. Well done Shelagh!

  • Comment number 20.

My eleven-year-old granddaughter would be an improvement on Gobby (sic) Logan.

I would hazard a guess that Georgie Porgie pudding and pie, is moving to breakfast for 'other' reasons.

  • Comment number 21.

It's very uncomfortable watching Ms. Fogarty on the web cam, laughing and joking while listening to the distressing reactions from the 7/7 relatives. As it concludes, she 'picks -up' the thread as though she was listening and moved.

Of course the solution is not to watch through the web cam. So I won't.

I would ask though. Is it too much to ask the presenters to have some restraint when a subject of some sensitivity is being reported?

As someone implied on another thread; some presenters are very smug and self-satisfied.

  • Comment number 22.

I totally agree Darlogas. I was watching on the webcam the other day at a less sensitive moment and thought that even then.

I think a memo needs to be drafted. It is insensitive in the extreme.
