Danny Baker

If you listen to Danny Baker on Saturday mornings, you'll know he's said on air that he has a health issue at the moment and will be presenting some weeks but not others.

Well today Danny wanted to give some more information to you via his Facebook page. We've pasted the full message from him below.

I know this will come as quite a shock. But as you can see from his message, he's in good spirits. So some Saturdays over the next few months he will be raring to go and will be on his 5 live show as normal and other weeks we'll be giving Danny a rest.

I am sure you will all join me in wishing him all the best for the months ahead.

reads:

Hello cats and kittens,

Apologies for the cloak and d. over recent weeks. However as it appears this is going to continue for the forseeable I really ought to offer up some sort of breadcrumbs trail as to what's going on. (As you know I am queasy about introducing vulgar real life onto the vaudeville stage so let's keep this crisp.)

After a pretty mouldy diagnosis about a month back I finally begin chemotherapy on Monday with further radiotherapy from January. Yes radiotherapy; can you beat it? This being so, the old treehouse baggy pants will be donned but sparingly. Once the quacks have soundly thrashed this thing I shall return like a rare gas and as if out of a trap. In the meantime I am watching Tommy Steele box sets (and has there ever been a more lying title to a film than TS's "It's All Happening"?) and urge you all to keep yakking up a storm and laugh extra loud at the incumbents.

Thank you for all the best wishes and concern from those who suspected as much about my "condition" and by all means keep ringing up Baylen and Amy to demand more and more Atomic Rooster and Spooky Tooth records.

So. Manly handshake. Walk right on. In the words of King George, "What what and there it is..."

Hoy hoy,All the best to Danny in his fight against cancer.
He has for a long time been the most entertaining radio broadcaster in the country. His interaction with the audience is second to none.
I have listened to him at various stations over the years and he never fails to amuse and inform with an encyclopaedic knowledge of trivia and an eclectic musical mix.
    Good Luck.

  • Comment number 2.

Danny's one of the last remaining reasons to listen to 5Live. He's innovative and an absolute master of the medium of radio and interacting with his listeners.

All I can do is wish him the very very best in his fight against cancer and I truly look forward to his return to the station when he's feeling up to it and then, finally, when he's free of the disease.

    From a fellow ELP fanatic

  • Comment number 3.

I think Danny is a terrific broacaster.

He has a common touch, coupled with an articulate and witty delivery.

He seems to be able to talk about almost anything, and to everyone from whatever background.

And as a fellow football fan, he is the tops. A proper fan,who can talk football because of just that. He supports a less than fashionable club( to say the least) rather than most of the presenters who seem to have 'adopted' a successfull club as their team, and thus have excluded themselves from the real foitball family. Danny is family.

Good luck Danny, and get well soon.

  • Comment number 4.

I am sorry that Danny is ill, I wish him all the best.

  • Comment number 5.

Best of luck, Danny, in your fight against the big C.

Have missed your dulcet tones and all-round silliness on Saturday mornings.

  • Comment number 6.

Best wishes to Danny, here's to a full and speedy recovery. The best radio broadcaster in the UK, bar none.

  • Comment number 7.

GillB wrote above "one of the last remaining reasons to listen to 5Live". I think Danny is one of the last remaining reasons to listen to Ö÷²¥´óÐã radio! He wakes me up on a Saturday with a programme worth listening to and lots of fun. I wish all other phone-ins treated their callers as Danny does. I'm so sorry to hear about Danny's illness and wish him all the very best for the future. Get well soon Danny

  • Comment number 8.

Get well soon Danny, you are a truely brilliant broadcaster.

  • Comment number 9.

Shocked to hear this. Very best of luck, you will beat this.

  • Comment number 10.

From Sniffin Glue, to NME (Where you first revealed Mr Jacksons "oddness"), 20th Century Box, and the Six oClock show to todays radio exploits, you have made it impossible to ignore you and usually a good reason to laugh..........You are too intelligent to go anywhere but to stay right here and enlighten and entertain us......................... Hold on this aint no bloody obituary!,
get well soon mate, thats an order Baker!

  • Comment number 11.

Very best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery.

  • Comment number 12.

I hope the treatment goes well. All the best.

  • Comment number 13.

I had a horrible feeling it was this, gutted to have my suspicions confirmed. Candyman, you'll get shot of this ghastliness, as feisty adversaries go, it's met its match! Come back soon, we're all rooting for you, and ahoy hoy, to you, whom I've always considered a special radio palsie xxx

  • Comment number 14.

As a previous poster has written, he is one of the best reasons to listen to Radio 5 Live, both when I used to listen to the pirate ship 606 on a Tuesday night, and now on Saturday mornings. So, all the best mucker and I'm sure you'll beat this and be back to normal (well as normal as he wants to be!) asap

  • Comment number 15.

Lets not get mawkish folks, Dan never seemed one for sentiment and I'm certain he will be returned to us a new man, besides its the nurses who I feel sorry for He'll be chewing their ear off no doubt.

  • Comment number 16.

Curses! My Saturday mornings must remain as entertaining as they have been - DB is a shining light on 5 live..

  • Comment number 17.

so sorry to hear of dannys illness . best of luck with the treatment .
all your listeners are with you , good luck.

  • Comment number 18.

Gutted. Best broadcaster around. Saturday mornings are unmissable with Danny. Looking forward to your speedy return. All the best.

  • Comment number 19.

    Danny,

All the best for a speedy recovery.

Your rendition of Fraser Digby's Washbag is legendary here in Swindon.

  • Comment number 20.

Saturday mornings aren't the same without you and Radio Five Live needs you back! Wishing you all the very best and looking forward to hearing you back on top form. Best wishes to you.

  • Comment number 21.

Plenty of good people on the radio, but only one great, hope you're back on the air soon Danny.

And if anyone needs cheering up search "Baker and Kelly - Gordon and the Bow Tie" on you tube!!

  • Comment number 22.

I forgot to mention the immortal words ...

    Nothing can go wrong now!

  • Comment number 23.

Keep Calm and Carry On, Danny.

    Pip-pip!

    Chris

  • Comment number 24.

Wishing you all the very best Danny,

From the original 606 and Breakfast on Radio 5 right through until this very day in my opinion there has been no finer broadcaster. Your shows have always helped to block out the misery of this existence, which is just one of a million phrases you've uttered that have made me smile.

Give this a right hammering and get well soon.

Now if only I could remember the fourth line of Top Cat ...

  • Comment number 25.

    Will you all the best

  • Comment number 26.

    *Wish you all the best

  • Comment number 27.

Best of luck - I've grown up with you over the years - 6 o'clock show onwards. I'm a Palace fan, but there ARE some some things more important than football - o.k. not many, but this is one! Best wishes! one day Palace and Millwall will be fighting it out for the Premiership title!!!! - Make sure that you are there to see it!! Look out for Crawley Town as well!!!

  • Comment number 28.

    All the best Danny.
I've been listening to your show for years. The best broadcaster on the Radio.
You're the best interviewer on TV or Radio. I love it when ever you have Stephen Fry on. He feels so relaxed when with you, and you seem to get more from him than anyone else does.. The Elton John show was also great. You make all of your guests feel at ease with your unique questions based on your obvious respect and knowledge of your subjects.
I know you will pull through this, and be back stronger than ever.
I shall have a sausage sandwich for you (Red sauce of course).

  • Comment number 29.

This is shock News, even to an experienced Broadcaster.
Danny makes people smile, sometimes the way he acts can be irritating but it makes up for it for giving people a smile and his antics on TV just add to what he cannot show on Radio.
I would hope that he has a speedy recovery and returns as soon as possible because he will be missed by TV and Radio Audiences alike.
And anyway despite the news, he's still upbeat!

  • Comment number 30.

Saturday morning show a highlight of my radio week. I love the way the program just seems to roll along without any script and structure and I guess that shows a real talent.

A real professional who can talk to his listeners which is more than a rarity.

All the best mate, get well

  • Comment number 31.

Thanks for all the times you've made me laugh and smile so far. I hope the treatment goes well and I'm looking forward to the return of a true broadcasting genius. There's no one like you out there, DB, you're a national treasure.

  • Comment number 32.

Testament to the genius of DB that my wife, who regards the rest of 5 live's output as annoying noise, thinks his Saturday show is brilliantly funny and worth staying in bed for!

    Get well soon Danny!

  • Comment number 33.

Best wishes to you and your family , as a sales rep ,in my car most afternoons you make it bearable. Hurry up and get well soon old boy .
n.b. when you come back can we finish the " cat & dog " superbowl !

  • Comment number 34.

Shocked to hear this news, but - like others - had feared something like this.

One of *the* finest broadcasters around, able to bring out the absolute best from anyone who contributes to the shows. So many wonderful radio highlights to remember - yes of course, the plywood bow tie, Joanne the barmaid and the many things confiscated on the way into football grounds.

Fight it for all you can, Danny, radio needs you.

  • Comment number 35.

Captain Danny, I and many others I'm sure, will be looking forward to the return sessions - and will do our best to keep the slot happy. Radio, my favourite medium and your session, Sat am, the treat of the week. You have it all - enjoy catching up on the dvd's meanwhile and see you when the medics send you back to the Ö÷²¥´óÐã. Take care now!

  • Comment number 36.

Best broadcaster around, have missed u on sat mornings. Good luck & remember we will all be saying "nothing can go wrong now" as we all wish u a speedy recovery

  • Comment number 37.

    I'm shocked.
Terrible news. I trust it's been caught early and that you'll be back soon.
You're my favourite on the radio at the moment.
Always cheerful, full of life, inquisitive, infectious enthusiasm, clutching crazy comments and questions out of the air, making the room buzz.
There aren't many people on the radio that I will purposely turn on to week in, week out. John Peel was one, and you are the other. Both on Saturday mornings, coincidentally. I never missed a show.
    I hope you're doing alright.
I've followed you ever since you wrote great columns and one-liners, the three dots, etc in NME in the 70's.
Then on the original Radio 5, then your Ö÷²¥´óÐã TV chat show (I remember you had Squeeze on and you said you were trying to get Marshall Crenshaw on too - also one of my faves), then 6 - 0 - 6, and now Saturday mornings.
Best wishes to you and to your family and get well soon, Danny.

    Barry

  • Comment number 38.

Hoy! Hoy! Candyman! and what a man you are! Obviously this is a horrible shock for you and your family. I feel I know you and your ' ever suffering family!!!'forever exposed to the world!! I dont know how you have the time to write your columns, present your shows. You just crack me up! It rare to laugh out loud at the radio. They say laughter is the best medicine, well youve been curing me for years. Now its our turn to give some back. So ' LETS LAUGH FOR DANNY BAKER' !
    Miko

  • Comment number 39.

Hi Danny get well soon. Hope you have a speedy recovery. Vic & Family
Great radio programme. Not the same without you.

  • Comment number 40.

Sorry to hear the news Dan, but I know you will give this interloper a severe beating with a big stick and send it off with a flea in its ear.

We all know you are Pure Gravy!!

    Keep your chin(s) up Dan!!!

  • Comment number 41.

    Danny,

In a saturated world of lazy journalism and even lazier broadcasting, you are a beacon of light!

Keep strong my son, I know you will!

    Josh

  • Comment number 42.

best wishes danny - looking forward to your speedy return to match fitness

you once read out my story about my new "norwedgian made" contact lenses that appeared to translate the adverts around the hordings of a dull league one match - the game was being screend live to norway......

also..did someone really see an owl walking acoss a zebra crossing ?

..did glenn tilbrook enter a "stars in your eyes" competition as the tilbrook and come second ?

..and the rossette made of ply wood has to be one of the funniest radio phone ins of all time..........hats on ths side of your head..... "be back soon"...... we need more of this stuff from the great candyman...

  • Comment number 43.

    Danny,

I remember listening to the 5Live breakfast show and the fuel it gave me to deal with the dull drabness of life.

Remember - In Sicily, women are more dangerous than shotguns.

  • Comment number 44.

Danny never fails to make me laugh out loud. As a fan for a number of years (right back to those golden early days of 606) I want to echo all the sentiments above.
All the best Danny, there are millions of us behind you.

  • Comment number 45.

You are , quite simply, the best there has ever been.

Our thoughts are with you and Wendy, Bonnie,Sonny and Mancie.

  • Comment number 46.

Best of luck in your fight against this, Danny. Saturday mornings are not the same without your wit and humour. Sort this out toute suite.

  • Comment number 47.

Good luck Danny - keep the faith.

  • Comment number 48.

    Danny,

    Best wishes and good luck,
    Richard, Julie, Jack and Neil..

  • Comment number 49.

Best Wishes to Danny and a speedy recovery.5live desperately needs you back and in good health.

  • Comment number 50.

Danny Baker - you are a legend in our household - your show is up there as a real Saturday treat - on a par in fact with the obligatory slice of New York cheesecake from the supermarket whilst doing the weekly shop.

Wishing you all the best in trouncing your cancer & returning to full health.

  • Comment number 51.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery,Danny - Everyone will be looking forward with baited B for when you're back with your hat on the side of your head and a rainbow round your shoulders.......

Look I'm sure these Doctors know what they're doing but personally I'd paint the tumour claret and blue and then treat it with some essence of Millwall. Give it some Danny boy look forward to your fighting fit return.

  • Comment number 53.

Sorry to hear about Danny's illness. Best wishes for a speedy recovery from a West Ham fan.

  • Comment number 54.

    Bless you Danny.

  • Comment number 55.

Agree with all the comments here - Danny Baker is without question the best British Radio Broadcaster over the last 20 years or so.

Innovative, spontanious and above all very funny. All others pale by comparison

Get well - look forward to having you back on the airwaves soon

  • Comment number 56.

Candyman - a pip and a dandy, a great shoe with it's lights on, nestling in green nowhere..............can't wait to hear this self-regarding nonsense again. Make sure you get up and finish fourth, my friend. Get well very soon.

  • Comment number 57.

Danny, look forward to you getting back. Your show is the best on Radio5. I remember you commenting on the mummies in Cario having a full set of gnashers because "they didn't want to go to their maker looking like Moore Marriott!" Priceless.

As a down trodden lawyer I have to work most Saturdays and always make sure that I am doing something between 9 and 11am which does not involve dictation so I can listen to your show.

When I was young you came down to the village of Meopham where I live to look at a Sinclair C5 that the guy next door owned and you stood on my parents drive whilst talking about it. I had a video of it which I watched so many times I wore the video out

Get back! I am waiting for someone to pick Cardinal Richelieu as a Monkeys dressed as famous people. It will happen one day

    Tim

  • Comment number 58.

And belated thanks for the Emerson Lake & Palmer piece in the Prog magazine. Get well soon.

  • Comment number 59.

Good luck Dan. It's probably irrelevant that you're the best radio presenter bar none, but them's the facts. Hope to hear you again soon.

  • Comment number 60.

This comment was removed because the moderators found it broke the house rules. Explain.

  • Comment number 61.

Danny. OY, DO ME A FAVOUR! Enjoy your sausage sandwiches, whether you have them with red sauce, brown sauce, or no sauce at all.

  • Comment number 62.

    Candyman,
Get back soon, saturday mornings are a lot more uninteresting at the moment.
The nation needs a repeat telling of the meeting with steel toecaps in the bank, and of course the infamous wooden bow tie.

  • Comment number 63.

Danny. We miss you. Come back soon. I went to school next to the Old Den and am about the same age as you. Your comments about "the old days" in Bermondsey always made me laugh. Good luck and see you soon. Saturdays just aren't the same.

  • Comment number 64.

Nice to see Danny on Harry Hill's progamme on Saturday.

  • Comment number 65.

Dear Danny or Danny Substitute and Izzy or Izzy substitute.

While sitting at the vet's awaiting the repair of my cat's bloody paw, i was discussing that classic tv show that is sadly missing from current schedules, "Monkies dressed as Famous People (plus Fairground Music)" with my 13 yr old son, Bill.

After coming up with a very average selection of Michael McIntyre, Christine Blakeley and Dawn French, Bill then came up with the comment that this is stupid and that it has never or will never exist.

I then came up with my selection, Elton John, Steve Nallon dressed as Margaret Thatcher and Queen Victoria he chuckled and said it may have potential on the schedules.

His next selection was George W Bush, Mother Theresa of Calcutta and Idi Amin. I think he's getting the hang of this, but still claims it's not a real tv show.

Please correct him and maintain the campaign for its return to the schedules!

Keep fighting for this program to appear on the schedules!

    Many thanks

  • Comment number 66.

Danny Baker is someone I have held in the highest esteem from the early days of reading his wonderfully funny articals in the music press untill now making me giggle like a silly school boy on saturday mornings. My family and I offer our prayers and very best wishes to Danny and his friends and family. As a west ham fan I know how hard millwall fans fight to win this hammer knows Danny will win this fight and be back making me laugh on saturday mornings. Big love Danny mate

  • Comment number 67.

Dan - hope you are on the road to recovery. Have a great Xmas and we look forward to hearing you full of Vim and Vigour in the new year!

  • Comment number 68.

If you read this Danny, can you please consider the awkward quandary I am currently in. What colour cravat does one wear with a Prince of Wales check suit? It is for a formal occasion and I will of course be wearing my customary monocle, with my hair centre-parted. I'm in a bit of a pickle Danny and no mistake, please help!

  • Comment number 69.

Just look how many post's for Danny...he really is the best...and like somebody else said one of the small reason left to listen to 5 Live. Danny get well soon fella, your a top man....and i want to tell you about a shoe in a tree near Heathrow.......
