Post categories:

Nigel Smith Nigel Smith | 16:26 UK time, Wednesday, 2 November 2011

Last night at an illustrious dinner in Manchester Peter Allen was inducted into the (along with his former colleague Jane Garvey as well as Andy Peebles and Sir Jimmy Young).

The sound quality isn't great but I thought you might like to hear Peter's acceptance speech.

The Radio Academy Hall of Fame recognises "those legendary voices who make and have made an outstanding contribution to the sound of British radio and to British cultural life" and everyone at 5 live is obviously delighted that Peter's been honoured.

What are your favourite moments from Peter's 5 live career?

There is a rock n' roll hall of fame or similar in the USA. Fairly recently they inducted Bo Diddley into the hall of fame. I just thought, you know, who are these people who deciding who should be admitted? Bo Diddley is a very long-established artist.

Of course, so is Peter Allen and Melvyn Bragg.

    Anyway congratulations to Peter Allen.

peter allen is one of the best. well deserved in my opinion.

  • Comment number 4.

I have never knowingly found myself in disagreement with Peter Allen

  • Comment number 5.

We're supposed to applaud aren't we? Someone on a hefty six figure salary doing their job and getting another plastic gong. Such is this station and its obsession with the cult of the personality

  • Comment number 6.

    Jane Garvey?

  • Comment number 7.

About time! Every day was a pleasure to work with Peter and Jane.

I admire Peter. However the Radio Academy and its spin off or whatever, the Sony Awards, smack a little bit too much of "your turn". One only has to look at the trustees to realise that you are never far from AVK.

However, I would like to congratulate Peter and the various fellow 5North presenters he has worked with, plus his time as a political journalist before he took on this job. It makes you appreciate that quality which he has so much of, and some broadcasters have so little. I am not just talking about current staff of 5North, before I get told off.

Not sure about my cultural life being changed by Peter, but he has made me laugh so often with his pithy comments to those he disapproved of, mainly in political interviews.

Keep up the good work Peter

Peter is a fantastic presenter and he throughly deserves the award.

    Well done Sir!!!

Also could you lot liven up a bit, every blog does not have to your negative, depressing viewpoints, try and be postive!!!

Well done Mr Allen - A diamond amongst the cubic zirconia.

  • Comment number 11.

Peter and Jane were the best double-act on radio. Can they not be reunited?

  • Comment number 12.

Why would Jane want to move to the North West with her kids? She has a brilliant way of presenting Woman'a Hour and is an antidote to Jenni Murray.

While Peter was at an illustrious dinner in Manchester (Oh what a surprise) pretty much everyone else at the Ö÷²¥´óÐã was in Cannes. How many Ö÷²¥´óÐã people are out there. I bet it's not far short of 20.

I've never quite understood why a more than capable journalist/presenter as Peter Allen has decided to stick around on such a light weight radio station when others have moved on to Radio 4 ? He deserves a far better platform than what 5live offers now.How many back slapping industry awards are there now ? The calendar seems inundated with them.

"Favourite moment" - the way he goes from the sombre reading of his screen about multiple deaths...
and then is immediately able to change his tone with an hilarious text about some odd-shaped vegetables that have fallen off a lorry on the M6

  • Comment number 16.

It doesn't sit comfortably does it? It is as if the words are being spoken but the meaning of them not thought about.

But if anyone deserves a prize at 5North it is him.

  • Comment number 17.

The incessant hoisting of Pete - higher and higher - by this station onto a plinth is all wrong.

A lot of awards, but especially in luvvie-land, where they'll throw an "illustrious dinner" or a black-tie gala at the drop of a hat (all on exs, all on you) confuse longevity and sentimentality with real achievement; such as war reporters or those investigative or in conflict - which are nearly all indigenous.

This is the third or fourth time this year he's won some award, so he should take the hint and bid "Goodnight, 5-Live sport with some northern bloke follows next" and exit. And of course, as mentioned above, you've got to consider who he's being compared with here!

Excellent post 15.I have always considered 5live to be in very bad taste when it switches from some tragic news story to some chap who grows funny shaped vegetables under his bed and with Aasmah Mir giggling away in the background. Its like the ' Thats Life ' of radio . ' It would seem that the death toll is rising there.......so Sid how did all those funny shaped vegetables come about........? '

I think Peter would have done an excellent job in Athens yesterday and today.

  • Comment number 20.

I was particularly disappointed Peter did not refuse to move to Salford because he would have created a proper focus for the radio at least of how expensive and geographically divisive this move is. "Celebrate Sport with the Ö÷²¥´óÐã is an action packed two weeks of shows, events and interactive sessions taking place at MediaCityUK and surrounding venues......." so blow the rest of the country if you want to go to a live event.

I don't understand why Ö÷²¥´óÐã North and 5North do not realise how marginalised the rest of the UK is by this move.

Mancs laden sport panel and Shelagh doesn't really know what she is talking about.

  • Comment number 22.

Just wanted to say throughly enjoyed listening to the Free Thinking Festival on 5live on Saturday, a brillant show, which gave an excellant insight into the editorial choices behind news stories, more of the same please 5live!!!

  • Comment number 23.

It needed radio3 if it was going to be about anything other than Lindsay Lohan

  • Comment number 24.

5 Lives phone in this morning about Michael Jackson 'legacy' was awful. The EU world is crashing around our oxters and yet you discuss a dead pop star.
