End of year honour for 5 live podcasts

A boy writes in the book of condolence in front of the AWD Arena on November 11, 2009 in Hanover, Germany. Enke, 32, goalkeeper for Hannover 96 and the German national team, was struck and killed the day before by a train at Neustadt am Rubenberge. Police confirmed that it was suicide.

Two of our podcast series – Fighting Talk and 5 live Sport Specials – have been selected by as among the very best of the last year in its annual Rewind list.

We’re obviously very proud when ourÌýprogrammes are recognised for their quality, but it’s even more so in these cases due to how they’ve evolved through the year.

The 5 live Sports Special series, which has been selected in the Best New Sports Podcast category, began in July to allow our sport documentaries to live beyond the seven-day iPlayer window.

These recently have included Moneyball, which looked at the growing influence of statistics in sport, Fists of Fury, which examined the rich tradition of pugilism in the Traveller, Roma and Gipsy communities in the UK, and, last night, Anatomy of the 100 metres, which examined what it takes to win the most high-profile race at the Olympics.

Perhaps the most memorable was A Life Too Short, in which Eleanor Olyroyd re-visits the tragic story of Germany goalkeeper , . It recently won the , which was an incredible honour.

The continued success of Fighting Talk, selected within the Sports Podcast category, is also fantastic. As well as the studio programmes, in 2011 it’s had live shows in front of audiences in Liverpool and London, as well as summer specials from , and the .

Over Christmas there are two more Fighting Talk specials, including a face-off against Ö÷²¥´óÐã 6 MusicÌýthat also features the as our house band, and there are big plans for next year.

On the whole podcast figures for 5 live are increasing, and we’re delighted – both from the numbers and from reaction - that listeners clearly enjoy them.

So what have been your favourite 5 live podcasts?
