Listening online during the Olympic Games

Post categories: ,Ìý,Ìý

Will Cooper Will Cooper | 16:02 UK time, Tuesday, 31 July 2012

The Olympics and Paralympics are the biggest events to occur in the UK this year, and 5 live is privileged to be host broadcaster.

However, due to rights restrictions we're unable to broadcast our Olympics coverage to our international audience who listen online.

All of 5 live's coverage, except Up All Night, will be UK-only online - including clips - for the duration of the Olympic Games. Likewise for our sister station 5 live Olympics Extra.

Full details of Ö÷²¥´óÐã Radio's international streaming rights can be read here in a blog post by Mark Friend, Ö÷²¥´óÐã Audio and Music's controller of multi-platforms & interactive.

Sports Extra in unaffected by Olympics rights and will continue to broadcast to our international audience where rights permit.

Will Cooper is Ö÷²¥´óÐã Radio 5 live's interactive editor.

Zelda: Been removed temporarily as there's a technical problem with the player on here. You can watch it on our Olympics Best Bits page: /programmes/p00wpfgr

Hopefully it'll be back up here shortly.

Thanks Will. I thought for a minute my cutting remark had crashed the blog!

I see Bacon has bagged himself an Olympic gig with Zoe Ball on R2 - described by respected radio critic Gillian Reynolds as a 'gabfest'. Sounds dreadful with those two at the helm - what will they talk about other than tweets and texts?'

As this is the main radio Olympic station, could we please get some real blogs about what is happening every day and listeners might be more inclined to post their reactions to all the action. It is a lost opportunity to encourage wider feedback and discussion which may end up as your Olympic legacy, Will.

I see Bradley Wiggins has been nicknamed 'Wiggo'..... I despair, I really do.

Blesed relief - 10.45am over to 5 Live Extra and the cricket. Olympic free zone. Please let it last for five days.

He has always been known affectionately as Wiggo, zelds.

Not sure how I feel about shoving cricket to the very base of the main Sports page on the website. We are NUMBER ONE you know.

//He has always been known affectionately as Wiggo, zelds.//

I don't know if that makes it worse or better.

Please please get Rachel burdan off the breakfast show . Her screeching voice combined with lack of knowledge or insight on nearly anything makes for painful listening . Oh shelagh how we miss you terribly

Could I just say that trying to read updates online is absolutely futile. Try looking at the Dressage competition and see if you can tell me how to keep up with current scores.

Re comment 11; whilst your views on her voice are a personal prefernece (I don't have a problem with it) I don't think she has any less insight or knowledge than the other news presenters who are presenting the Olympic coverage. If anything I think she's the best thing about the Burden/Campbell/Riley triumvirate as she at least tries to keep to the matter at hand without the unnecessary 'banter' of the other 2.
As there is very little non-Olympic news being discussed, I don't know why they didn't place sports broadcasters on these programmes. The likes of Inverdale & Oldroyd often manage to professionally cover news events in their broadcasts.

5 live is so full of totally biased coverage of GB competitors they often fail to say who wins gold or silver if the Brit comes in Bronze, Its pathetic Blinkered unprofessional coverage, But then when was Ö÷²¥´óÐã sport 5 live unbiased. No more than Populist flag waving station

  • Comment number 15.

Well it is our coverage. If you want unbiassed there won't be a host Olympic coverage in modern history that didn't favour their own team's news. Also, the fact you are posting online means you can find out what you want to know immediately. I for one am glad the GB team is being bigged up, as we say in my area of London. Smile. Life is good in the country for once, feelgood is infectious and instead of the disgusting riot of selfishness last summer, we have a lovely feeling of happiness for once.

    I feel sorry for India
