A sporting balance

Thanks to all who posted comments on my last post, I will attempt to answer some of your questions.

First of all, it's timely that there is a question here that relates to coverage, specifically because just this week we announced a significant autumn season of rugby on the Ö÷²¥´óÐã spanning Ö÷²¥´óÐã One, Ö÷²¥´óÐã Two, Ö÷²¥´óÐã Three, Radio 5 Live, and .

All of the Wales and Scotland matches will be broadcast live, while there will be highlights of England's matches against Australia, Argentina and New Zealand.

This weekend I'm also delighted that we've got international back on the Ö÷²¥´óÐã when the England and Australia game is broadcast live - this being the first rugby league international on our network for nine years.

I really do believe that our rights portfolio is currently very strong and that the sports we've got on the Ö÷²¥´óÐã right now are extremely wide-ranging and do reflect a very healthy mix of fixtures and events. These include sports across the spectrum. For example: American football, athletics, badminton, basketball, bowls, cricket, darts, equestrianism, football, golf, gymnastics, horse racing, motor racing, motorcycling, road and track cycling, rowing, rugby league, rugby union, sailing, skiing, snooker, , Paralympics, tennis, triathlon and, of course, the .

In relation to the NFL query: we show and are showing the Superbowl final live and in the past we have indeed shown the Wembley NFL game as a simulcast broadcast with Sky. This year, though, we felt it was better value for licence fee payers if we showed this clash as a highlights package.

Sport on the Ö÷²¥´óÐã has a number of roles and it is not always to chase ratings but to provide coverage of mass popular sports as well as those that would not get the same exposure elsewhere. So while not every sport is to everyone's liking, we're attempting to attract a cross section of licence fee payers.

The Government's listed events review is currently ongoing and the results should be known by the end of the year, but you can look at our submission in full here, which should answer some of your questions.

As for the question about more details on specific events - a lot of these are still in the planning stages, but you will hear more about them as they start to be confirmed.

Thanks for this, No answer about improving the online quality to go some way to compensate DTT Viewers who've lost Red Button recently.

Watching the RL today I have a question. Why is it that the Ö÷²¥´óÐã who generally make a good fist of impartiality throw it all out the window when it comes to sport, especially when its England versus anyone. Witness the opening sequence for today's game. I counted 5 past England tries against 1 Australian. Is that a fair reflection of history? I think not. And all too often we have commentators and comments people who are so biased they almost capsize. We need to see more professionalism not jingoistic cheerleading. It is so irritating and little wonder the rest of the world take such delight in sticking it to England. Ö÷²¥´óÐã Sports needs to raise its game.

May I ask why Barbara's blogs are being moved over here - I prefer them in the Sports Editors section, this is a SPORT blog after all.

    Dear Barbara,

Thanks to the Ö÷²¥´óÐã for the excellent Formula One coverage this year. It has been brilliant. Every member of the team, from presentation to commentary has done a superb job.

Could I ask about Formula One in High Definition for 2010? What is the progress on getting Bernie to provide a HD feed for the Ö÷²¥´óÐã to broadcast?

    Best regards.

First off, can someone please sort out the linking of the Ö÷²¥´óÐã blogs, it's taken three different URLs to arrive at the actual blog (and this is not the only example of this happening either) from the summary in the Ö÷²¥´óÐã sports editors section...

No it is not, Barbara Slater just happens to be a senior Ö÷²¥´óÐã person at the Ö÷²¥´óÐã whose remit happens to be Sport - read the explanation for these blogs - her blog is in the correct place:

At Boilerplated: the issue is that Barbara's predecessor in the role, Roger Mosey, blogged regularly on the Sports Editors blog where he read and responded to comments. This relates to the issue I raised in Barbara's first blog: blog often and blog in the right place.

    Hello Barbara,

May I also echo the comments about your predecessor Roger Mosley's excellent blog which he not only wrote articles for regularly, but also took the time to reply to comments.

I would like to ask you a question regarding FA Cup rights. Since Setanta went under, no one has picked up the rights to show certain games, and it is now that the stage were the FA are streaming the matches that would have been televised on their website. Surely these must be available at knock-down prices for the Ö÷²¥´óÐã to pick up and add to their frankly sparse portfolio of live domestic football.

Can't the Ö÷²¥´óÐã purchase right, even one game at a time, matches like Norwich vs. Carlisle/Morcombe to show on the Ö÷²¥´óÐã2 or even the red button, saving me the hassle of trying to watch my team on a laptop?

"All of the Wales and Scotland matches will be broadcast live, while there will be highlights of England's matches against Australia, Argentina and New Zealand."

Could I ask why it is that the Ö÷²¥´óÐã has gone for live broadcasts of all Wales and Scotland matches but none of England's? It seems a rather unfair to your English fee-payers.

"All of the Wales and Scotland matches will be broadcast live, while there will be highlights of England's matches against Australia, Argentina and New Zealand". this is all well and good but the quality of the last wales rugby game, and todays, is terrible. stephen jones's penalty at 50mins was virtually unwatchable. when will bbc hd be worth the money we give?
also LLAMATRON, sky have the rights the english games
