Pipa Doubtfire, head of revenue management at the Ö÷²¥´óÐã, leads the TV Licensing Management Unit – a team responsible for collection of the Licence Fee. Here she shares some surprising facts about TV Licensing on today’s publication of its Annual Review.

The TV Licensing team at the Ö÷²¥´óÐã is a small group of experts with a big responsibility – the efficient collection of £3.7bn for the Ö÷²¥´óÐã. Whether it’s thrilling sports coverage, cutting-edge documentaries or side-splittingly funny comedy, income from the licence fee helps fund the Ö÷²¥´óÐã programmes we know and love.

Our Annual Review is a chance for us to look back at our activities and performance over the past year. , I spoke about how we had once again reduced the cost of collection by £15m. This year, I’m pleased to say we have reduced the cost of collection again to an all-time low of 2.7p per £1 collected. This wouldn’t have been possible without our many stakeholders, who help us reach a diverse audience of more than 25 million customers each year.

The Ö÷²¥´óÐã has managed collection of the Licence Fee since 1991 and we’re always looking at new ways of working. This year we launched a faster version of the website, which for the first time enables our cash scheme customers to pay via the main site; and we’ve rolled out new handheld devices for our enforcement officers, giving them better access to live information from our database.

We have also launched a brand new YouTube channel, housing TV Licensing’s trails and short films, the most recent highlighting the voices behind classic children’s TV programmes. The films are currently featured in the exhibition at The Lowry.

I’d like to leave you with five facts you may not have known about TV Licensing already. You can find more facts in our Annual Review and in our ‘TV Licensing in Numbers’ infographic below.

  1. Between 94% and 95% of UK households and businesses pay their TV Licence.
  2. Our enquiry officers made 3.8 million visits to unlicensed properties in 2013/14. That’s about 36 a day per enquiry officer.
  3. The majority of customers buy their TV Licence by Direct Debit (71.8%), though a small minority still pay by cheque (3.1%).
  4. Our three UK-based customer service centres answer an average of 21 calls per minute.
  5. While the vast majority of TV Licensing website visitors come from the UK, almost 250,000 came from the USA.
