55 years since opening of 'TV Factory' Television Centre

On 29 June 1960 the 主播大秀 first started broadcasting from Television Centre in West London. It took six years to build, cost £12m and the then Director General Gerald Beadle said it would be the "Hollywood" of the small screen.

55 years on we pay tribute to the opening night in pictures:

The production gallery at TVC, monitors show the opening outside broadcast sequence in Televisions Centre's central courtyard.

"First Night" was a 70-minute variety show given before an audience largely made up of people who helped to create TVC. The Toppers, the Silhouettes, and the Irving Davies Dancers in "On The Town" are pictured in the opening number.
