Training Scheme Producer, 主播大秀 Kick Off

The rewards showcase took place Friday 6 September at the home of 主播大秀 Sport in .

After eight weeks spent working alongside 主播大秀 radio and online teams, the 19 reporters met up on the top floor of Quay House in Salford, to share their stories and experiences with each other.

The 主播大秀 Kick Off Trainee Sport Reporter scheme is a work experience placement that is managed by Head of Sport for English Regions Charles Runcie, part-funded by 主播大秀 English Regions and and produced in Birmingham.

The awards were presented by Charles Runcie with guest speeches from David Holdsworth, Controller of English Regions and ex-reporter Kristian Reed (now an assistant producer for 主播大秀 Sport News). Don Kong, Trainee Schemes Coordinator at 听also joined us and shared his careers advice.听

主播大秀 Radio 5 Live鈥檚 Eleanor Oldroyd presented the award certificates and discussed her career to date and gave advice to reporters about their next steps saying that sometimes: 鈥渋t鈥檚 about putting yourself out there and saying 鈥業 am prepared to take a risk鈥欌.

Eleanor had originally helped raise awareness of the Kick Off Trainee Sport Reports awards amongst her Twitter followers, describing her own job as, 鈥渢he best job in the world鈥.

主播大秀 Kick Off Reporters has existed in its present incarnation (it was previously known as the 主播大秀 Blast Reporter scheme) since 2011 and aims to bring people of all ages and backgrounds who share a passion for sport into the 主播大秀, people would never otherwise think of careers in the 主播大秀 or sports journalism. 听

We do not require any previous journalism experience to apply for the scheme. It鈥檚 something we communicate from the recruitment stages because we believe that once we have found someone with a genuine passion and drive for sport we can teach them how best to report it. I feel it is this focus on sport that stands the scheme apart from others.

This year was a first for the scheme because we had reporters based in 主播大秀 Scotland and 主播大秀 Wales. They joined reporters in 主播大秀 Local Radio stations across England and in Jersey.

Some reporters this year have already been in touch to let us know that they have been successful in finding work from the scheme in their 主播大秀 local radio station. Others have used the scheme to decide if they would like to change careers and find a job as a sports reporter.

Previous reporters now work for 主播大秀 Sport online teams, Asian Network and 主播大秀 Local Radio teams as reporters, assistant producers, producers and presenters.

The 主播大秀 staff mentors who volunteer to work with reporters throughout the eight weeks, have expressed some of the benefits of having a reporter working with the trainee reporters. Feedback from one mentor new to scheme this year commented how it had been rewarding to work around people who, 鈥渂ring a fresh perspective to a story鈥.

As producer of the scheme, I've spent a lot of my summer helping promote the many stories that our reporters have been involved with. All of these stories are available this year via for the first time.听

For me, the most rewarding part of producing the 主播大秀 Kick Off Trainee Sports Reporter scheme is feeling that I am involved in something that is making a real difference, not only to the 主播大秀鈥檚 output and services but also in the careers of the reporters and mentors involved.
