ATL's Top 20 Albums of 2009

Post categories: ,Ìý

ATL | 13:37 UK time, Tuesday, 22 December 2009

What is a single but a tasty aperitif before the feast of an album-sized main course? Well, of course it is on occasion an entirely misleading mission statement of an act's abilities which leads to crushing disappointment upon shelling out for the full, tedious text. But, as you can see with the number of names here that also appear on our singles of 2009 list, that's rarely the case with ATL's faves.

If the singles gongs are like individual awards, think of ATL's Top 20 Albums of 2009 as the prizes for the best teams. Those that work best collectively, that don't rely on one outstanding performer. The ones you can rely on for sustained, and probably repeated pleasure through the years.*

As you can see, our convoluted scoring system has led to a three-way tie for 19th place, meaning that Kasabian, Flaming Lips and our own Pocket Promise must devise a means to sort out among themselves who should do the honourable thing and drop out. We look forward to hearing from them. As per usual, you may applaud, boo or, most hurtful of all, simply ignore our choices with your comments below...

So, the funky French electro-popsters romp off with our album of the year award (well, if there were an award, they would get it, but there's not) after two appearances in our Top 20 Singles of 2009. That's got to make them our band of the year, right? Wrong, because we reserve that particular accolade for our Local Act of 2009, which we shall be revealing on our final show of 2009, on Monday, 28th December, at 8.00pm on Radio Ulster. Be there.
