Amy's Fresh Meet: Bruce Peninsula
are a band that have been floating about the blogosphere for a while now, but it's only over the festive lull that I got a chance to listen to their album, A Mountain IsÌýA Mouth. The Canadian collective have a pretty distinctive sound with forceful driving rhythms, a gospel-esque choir and a gravelly lead vocal taking centre stage.
Think of local outfit having an anxiety-riddled melt down and Ìýhijacking the main vocal, marching them into a doomed but righteous battle... or you know, something like that,Ìýwould goÌýsome way to describing what Bruce Peninsula sound like. It's a mixture of straight up folk, traditional gospel, tribal, a bit of prog and eerie rock.
It took me a few listens to really get into this album. There are some gems, some memorable epics, a lot of call and response and a few bits of uninspiring filler. The record is lush with instrumentation and harmonies but it's hard to keep things fresh and the end of the record seems to just fade away.
But it's tracks like Steamroller, 2nd 4th World War and Crabapples that make the Canadians an exciting prospect live. The music lends itself to what I can only hope would be a powerful and engaging performance. I'm imagining something between the , , and . Whether we'll get a chance to see them this side of the Atlantic in 2010 remains to be seen, but if they grace our shores I'll surely be there to welcome them.
