Chattering Classes #18 - Captain Kennedy

Post categories:

ATL | 15:36 UK time, Wednesday, 28 July 2010

Capt_Kennedy.jpgIt's that time again folks, when we unleash our Rigsy (on whatever online chat thingy-majig he can get to work) and let him do his worst with a local band ATL are currently digging.

This time around it's the turn of poor Stephen McGurk from local alt-country, folk-ish (just listen to their tunes already!) seven-piece Captain Kennedy. Or at least that's who Rigsy THOUGHT he was talking to...

***

2.54pm Rigsy says:yeo

2:54pm Stephen says: Well mate, how's it going?

2:54pm Rigsy says: i'm sweet. listening to captan kennedy and arcade fire at the same time. where are you, what can you see?

2:55pm Stephen says: That's an interesting mix right there. I'm sitting with a cup of coffee in my attic room with all the instruments dotted about. Can actually see Black Mountain from the window, but it's a bit cloudy there today.

2:57pm Rigsy says: you see, thats proper. most peole just go 'um, i'm in work'.
so yr the drummer in captain kennedy. We usually have a 'NO RINGOS' policy with interviews (joke) so explain what makes you worth interviewing

2:58pm Stephen says: Yeah I'm more of a George Harrison man myself.

2:59pm Stephen says: Well I suppose I'm one of the founding members of the band if you want to put it like that. But more to the point drummers are always more fun to be around.

3:00pm Rigsy says: ha ha, true dat
we always here about this little sub-scene in belfast that you guys are apparantly part of who do you see as your peers about the place?

3:02pm Stephen says: That's news to me. We never thought of ourselves as part of a scene, but i suppose there are alot of bands around this country that I personally actually really enjoy listening to and seeing live. I mean you just have to look at the wealth on offer at Glasgowbury to see that.

3:02pm Rigsy says: which bands would you converse with though, lend amps to, generally feel you have affinity with?

3:05pm Stephen says: Well it depends if they ask nicely or not. No but we always have a good timeÌýwhen we meet up and play with the likes of Jackson Cage, Lowly Knights and I haven't seen the guys in a while, but I'm looking forward to having a bit of a laugh with Leeward Side this Friday night.

3:05pm Rigsy says: do you all picnic together? i like to think that you do

3:06pm Stephen says: I'd say it'd be an interesting picnic. You should come if we organise one.

3:07pm Rigsy says: did glasgowbury at the weekend feel as much of a big deal to you as it did to me?

3:09pm Stephen says: Without question! Well, from what i remember anyway, it did get a bit hazy towards the later hours. I had no idea what to expect from it, but it delivered, and more! There were too many class bands to see.

3:09pm Rigsy says: speaking of which, tell us about the gig you guys have on friday

3:10pm Stephen says: Apologies for the slow typing but i busted my hand up on Saturday and I have to rely on the skills of my lovely assistant here.

3:10pm Rigsy says: ha ha! is someone else typing this up for you?! thats AMAZING!
do you have a helper monkey?

3:11pm Stephen says: Karl Pilkington would be amazed by it!

3:11pm Rigsy says: seriously, who's typing?!

3:12pm Stephen says: Do I get disqualified for having someone type? All the words are mine though!

3:12pm Rigsy says: ha ha, this is class. did you bust both your hands?!

3:13pm Stephen says: Well the right paw is really cut up, but the left is dead-on.

3:13pm Rigsy says: so instead of using your left hand you've got a helper monkey?
LOVE IT! are you still playing the gig on friday with yr gammy hand?

3:15pm Stephen says: Oh yeah of course. I broke my hand last year and played one handed for a while, but that was only in practise. But I'll definately be alright for TheÌý**** Ice Cold Big Gig. Wouldn't miss it!

3:15pm Rigsy says: lol @ getting the branding in. you lookin free booze?

i'm going to asterix that out so you have to go without

3:18pm Stephen says: I thought that might have been too obvious. But yeah seriously looking forward to the Spring & Airbrake on Friday. Last time we played there was unbelievable. It's class that for a venue it's size that it's had soRigsy says: of the biggest naRigsy says:s about playing there.

3:18pm Rigsy says: what will people see when they walk in and CK are onstage?
and what are they missing out on if they don't bother

3:22pm Stephen says: We're pretty much a live band through and through. We like to change the arrangements of the songs live to keep ourselves entertained and the audience entertained. We've obviously all the material from the album that's about to be released in the set. But we've a couple of new tunes that we're aiming to record as soon as we can. but what people hear on the radio isn't exactly what they'll hear live. That'd be too boring.

Wow, that was a long one!

3:23pm Rigsy says: yr helper monkey needs a rest after that poor thing.
m8 enjoy friday, I'M AFRAID OUR TIME IS UP

3:24pm Stephen says: Just when I was starting to enjoy it! Ah well, another time. All the best.
