Jay Z v. Nas
Rigsy - ATL Presenter

JazVnas.jpgToo often beefs in hip hop get way out of hand. But thankfully, the only long lasting outcome of Jay Z and Nas' battles during the late 90s and early 00s was a load of amazing rhymes and decent tunes. The best of them being 'Takeover', a Doors sampling Nas diss on Jay Z's incredible 'Blueprint' album. 'You little ****, I got money stacks bigger than you' rasped Jay, before concluding 'a wiseman told me don't argue with fools, cause people from a distance can't tell who is who', essentially rising above the playground bickering. Other notable moments in hip hops most entertaining feud was repeated homophobic slurs from Nas, and Jay Z's mother weighing in, insisting her son apologize to Nas publically for suggesting he'd slept with the mother of Nas' daughter. Unfortortunately, the whole thing came to an end in 2005, with the two performing together in New York. Then Nas signed to Jay Z's label and the two startred touring together. Bummer.

Lou Barlow (Sebadoh) vs J, Mascis (Dinosaur Jr)
Steven Rainey - ATL Contributor and Friend

J_masc.jpgOnce Brother's in Arms in the mighty Dinosaur Jr, Mascis and Barlow's spectacular falling out stemmed from an inability to vocalise their feelings towards each other. Pent up and tense, the two expressed their sentiments through their music, with 1988's Bug featuring a Mascis penned masterpiece in non-communication entitled 'Don't', where Barlow was instructed to scream "WHY DON'T YOU LIKE ME!?!?" for almost six minutes until he allegedly began to cough up blood. Barlow was sacked from the band, forming Sebadoh, and taking musical pot-shots at his former bandmate for the next few years. At one point, Barlow's girlfriend even left him for the lawyer Mascis was using to sue him. But it all has a happy ending, as the two sullen indie-rock titans reconciled their differences in 2005, and have since released two albums of blistering indie rock, and presumably trying to be nice to each other.

ASIWYFA vs Fighting with Wire (2009- present)
Paul McClean - ATL Producer

In the run up to a double headliner live gig at Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival, two heavyweights of NI music went toe to toe. It started with a throwaway 'diss' from the north coast instrumentalists wherein ASIWYFA bassist Johnny Adger was so tense that he was unable to face forwards. The Derry three piece repsonded with a ferocious display of mexican wrestling outfits. Things took a turn for the worse when ASIWYFA upped the ante, with Adger now appearing shaven headed and incoherent. There were radio interviews on Across the Line that further fuelled the feud. The mutual loathing came to a violent head at the now infamous 'Wam Bam in the Wigwam' that Spring. The bout went the distance and eventually was declared a draw. Given the amount of innocents caught up the crossfire, a series of top level shuttle diplomacy efforts took place between Derry and Portstewart resulting in a fragile truce that has held to the present day.

Courtney Love Vs. Billy Corgan (Lilly Allen, Dave Grohl, the world...)
Amy McGarrigle - ATL Content Assistant

Courtney Love has somewhat of a reputation when it comes to feuds and bust ups. Even recently, she had a heated and public engagement with popstress Lilly Allen over Twitter. But it's hardly the first, or the last. There's the famous and on going battle with Dave Grohl which came to fruition when Grohl and Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic tried to release a Nirvana rarities box set. And of course, the decade old feud with ex-boyfriend Billy Corgan from the Smashing Pumpkins. Corgan got a little peeved for not being credit for co-writing and playing on Hole's album 'Celebrity Skin'. Hardly a man of reason himself, the feud hasn't really subsided through the years, with the fight once again spreading to Twitter. Oh Twitter... Making all things public. We love you.
