SuggestiON-AIR: Great Gigs you've Missed

Catching a band before they break can be equal parts skill and luck. Everyone has a friend or knows somebody who is forever rollicking on about the next ‘big thing’ and then never lets you forget it when said band blows up into a huge world conquering beast. On the other hand you may have been dragged to a gig or are patiently suffering through the support act and BANG it happens you have fallen in love with the next big thing.
It’s not discovering the acts that we are talking about tonight. It is the missing out of the gig. What gig have you missed out on that you have completely kicked yourself for missing? What gig have you missed that your friends have not let you live down.

The Strokes -Ìý Belfast 2001
Suffering as I do from FOMO* syndrome, I've been lucky enough to catch a load of now massive bands on their first, pre-debut album tour. Arctic Monkeys, Kaiser Chiefs, Franz Ferdinand (supporting Interpol) and The Libertines (supporting Supergrass), for example - and thats just gigs at the Limelight. But, when The Stokes played that venue in June 2001, I couldn't be bothered. I actually had a ticket and a load of mates were going, but for some ridiculous reason I stayed at home - I think it was a Sunday night and I was feeling a little fragile after one too many milkshakes the previous evening. I'm literally kicking myself as I type....
*Fear of missing out.
ÌýBroken Social Scene / Mogwai, Glasgow 2005 (I think)
Steven Rainey - ATL Stunt Producer
Ìý The Specials - Belfast 2009
Philip Taggart – ATL Content Assistant Last year I went through a big phase of listening to nothing but British ska music. This soon dissipated after a few months after I realised that there isn’t a great discography of quality ska out there. Due to severe lack of fundage I was still to purchase a ticket for the gig. It then transpired I was to do my first present of Across The Line on the night of the show. I was extremely disappointed to be missing the gig but also wrapped in the horrors of figuring out how I was meant to be a presenter for the night. I ended up cutting my losses and playing some quality local ska in the form of Pocket Billiards on the show. Ìý Ìý ÌýAsh and Snow Patrol - Derry 2000 Amy McGarrigle – ATL Content Assistant Ash & Snow Patrol at Nerve Centre circa 2000 ( i think). 2 of my mates went up from Donegal and they still talk about it to this day. I don't know if it was the gig or the fact Gary came out of the shower to sign something for my friend Patricia,ÌýbutÌýeither wayÌý the gig has stayed in their minds for years...and years...and years...Ìýbut I didn't go for some reason. I was 15 mind. Though so were they.. hmmmm I really have no idea why I wasn't there. Every Xmas though, its reminisced. Ìý Ìý
After completely falling in love with Broken Social Scene's You Forgot it in People album, I felt hugely let down by their self-titled follow up album, so much so that I threw a huff when they announced a gig in Glasgow, deciding to stay home whilst all my friends travelled down to what they were sure was to be the gig of a lifetime. "P'shaw!" I tutted. "I'll have a far better time at home…on my own…watching a Talking Heads DVD (which I've already seen)."
Ignoring the fact that the show turned out to be absolutely mind-blowing (by all accounts), the true tragedy here is that I could never have possibly known that all my flatmates would spend the entire night WITH THE BAND, hanging out and having a great time.
All of which adds up to me hating that album even more.
