SuggestiON-AIR: Best Remixes

Post categories:

ATL | 16:36 UK time, Monday, 21 March 2011

Having barely survived a night in the company of 2manydjs, who played Shine over the weekend, ATL thought it appropriate to celebrate the art of the remix. The Belguin duo, also known as Soulwax, are probably the kings of the remix, turning everything from The Gossip, MGMT, Dolly Partin and Lipps Inc into dancefloor destroyers. But we're not just talking about dance remixes, we're also thinking about any reworking which manages to take an already great track in an even better direction.

Let us know your thoughts and opinions by tapping us up here, on the ATL Facebook or ATL Twitter or text in to 81771 and we will give you a shout out on tonight’s show.

Justice - Phantom Pt. 2 (Soulwax night version)

Near impossible for me to pick one, but as this is off the back of another chaotic set from the kings of the remix, it'd be rude not to pick something by Soulwax. Their remixes are always a treat - mainly because they tend to keep the vocals and/or structure of the original while trashing it up and dragging it onto the dancefloor. This remix of Justice even has a few moments silence - the ultimate breakdown

Tortoise - Djed (UNKLE Remix)

This was the first track I ever heard from Tortoise, but I was totally oblivious to the fact it was a remix. So I was expecting more electronic-ish ambient hip hop material but instead found a jazzy proggy post rock ambient band that went on to be one of those bands that change the way you listen to music. Anyway, back to this remix! Sounding rather different from the original 21 minute/ four part piece, the remix harnesses a similar mood and tone, lulling you into a hazy trance and then slowly adding a little foreboding under current. Or maybe that's just me. Either way this track introduced me to both Tortoise AND UNKLE so it sticks with me as one of the most influential remixes I've ever heard.

Friendly Fires – Paris (Aeroplane ft Au Revior Simone remix)

This is a hateful question, given that there are almost as many good remixes as good tracks out there. Very few actually outperform the original though, like this fairly recent choice. Its kind of bizarre that the Italian remixers just basically rebuilt the song with a new vocalist, but all in all it’s a welcome change from the remix blueprint when the results are this good. Weighing in around a lazy 115 bpm, the tracks is a heady mixture of staccato 80's synths and claps, dreamy vocals and - later on - a speaker-shredding distorted bass. The Friendly Fires version was head and shoulders above most but this remix felt like a walk among the clouds.

Midlake - 'Roscoe' (Wizard's Sleeve Remix)

Midlake always had that dreamy, 'Fleetwood Mac'-esque feel to them, but this remix from Groove Armada's Late Night Tales compilation brings that sensibility to the foreground. The dynamics of the original are completely reconstructed, revealing something much more beguiling and enticing than what had previously existed. Indeed, if one hears this version first (as I did), the original seems a bit…well, boring, to be honest.

Everything Everything – Photoshop Handsome (II Figures Remix)

This remix of the second single from Everything Everything comfortably slots into the template of what a remix should do. It takes an angular slice of future pop and re-re-jigs it into a smooth, lush dancefloor séance. It irons out the frenetic rhythms, re-imagines the aural perception of the track and decides that this song might feel more comfortable in a club with a 4/4 beat.
