Festival Sound Clash!!!

I'm off to sunny (hopefully) Barcelona next week to go to the ever 'Pitchfork-esque' indie hipster fest that is Primavera. Big acts like The National, Simian Mobile Disco, Interpol, PJ Harvey, and The Flaming Lips will play along more underground, left of centre acts. In the run up to the festival, I made the customary 'festival playlist' with some of my favourites and tracks from new acts I haven鈥檛 heard of before. That traditional playlist lead me to find the Finnish group, Rubik.

Rubik are hardly new, with their first release in 2004, but I don鈥檛 think they've ever graced this island, and so have evaded my attention. But for the last month their new album 'Solar' has been on repeat, with it's glorious, sometimes proggy, indie-pop tones. However, I'm torn. The scourge of festivals will take a firm grip at Primavera, with one of my old favourites playing at the very same time across the forum.

The Album Leaf have been a staple in my repertoire for sombre, beautiful moments since 2004's 'In a Dark Place'. I have wanted - no, make that 鈥渘eeded鈥! - to see Jimmy LaValle for years, and now is my chance! But, Rubik, my 'new found love,' sound like they could be so much fun to watch live, whereas The Album Leaf feel like something rooted in my bedroom ,or soundtracking my midnight trip home. What to do?!?

In fairness to this festival, many of the acts pop up playing other sets here and there, but as is the case with any festival, there will be clashes. Should I go see Low, Twin Shadow or Belle & Sebastian? The National, Pere Ubu, or Ariel Pink鈥檚 Haunted Grafitti? Sufjan Stevesn or Avi Buffalo? The list goes on鈥ut to be honest, the better the festival, the harsher the clash. Bring it on!
