Oxegen 2011 - The Final Word

The Attendance

Was almost scandalously quiet on Friday, with a handful of people watching Sven Vath and Leftfield while mediocre crowds witnessed big turns from Swedish House Mafia and The Strokes. Even Black Eyed Peas struggled a bit on the main stage. It's clearly less about camping and all about the day tickets though, with the crowd picking up a fair bit on Saturday, doubly so come Sunday.

The Crowd

ÌýWhat that meant for us was more space and less melters - victory for the average punter going about his/her business. If you're talking good behaviour and nice vibes, this was possibly the best Oxegen ever.

The Security

All reports suggest they did a fantastic job. Again, this may be partially down to the relatively low numbers of punters, but we found them patient, reasonable and helpful. At OFWGKTA (read the review) they were nothing shy of remarkable. Kudos.

The Food

Again, it felt like an improvement. Those crepes and gourmet burgers were the business and €6 for either felt reasonable.

The Booze

Without cups to buy, €5 a pint meant savings on last year. And there was rarely a queue at any of the bars, again because of the low-ish turnout. The cocktail bar was rubbish this year, mind.

The Weather

We didn't get a full dry day once again, but not the worst year by any stretch of the imagination. Yes we got (short) unholy downpours, but we also got a fair bit of sunburn.

The Non-Music

Oxegen still lacks anything of real interest outside the music. There's no festival vibe in that respect and nowhere picturesque or interesting to take a break from it all. Then again, there never has been, which was always a big shame.

The Future

In many ways, the relatively poor turn out really did make it aÌýmore comfortableÌýweekend for most, but it also puts a bit of a question mark over the festival's future. The event did undersell, mostly for reasons beyond's Oxegen control - money, of course was no doubt the major factor. Regarding the line up, a lack of decent, alternative music in the charts meant, like a lot ofÌýother festivals this year, Oxegen has looked towards pop music more than it ever did. And thatÌýcan put off a certain type of music fan.ÌýIn short,Ìýthere's definitely a lot for them to think about and potentially change. Next years festival, assuming it goes ahead (and we've not heard anything to suggest it won't) could be make or break. After 12 years of Witnness and Oxegen, here's hoping it's a festival that continues to flourish.
