Oxegen 2011 - Cashier No.9
Green Spheres, Saturday, 3.55pm
Describe in a Tweet: They've only gone and nailed it.
What happened: It's really disappointing that Cashier No.9 are the only Northern Irish band here this weekend (other than Two Door, but they almost don't count anymore). So, as far as we're concerned, they've an entire nation's renaissance to represent in half an hour. GO!
Crazy in Love: They pulled it off. A genuinely superb turn, from start to finish. Last time this reviewer watched Cashier No.9, he worried a little they weren't quite up to the task of representing live their astonishing debut album. Seems a ludicrous concept now, watching a confident, polished six piece (Wally Wallace now adds percussion and harmonica) allowing their own songs to soar. Opening with their biggest track (the increasingly awesome Goldstar) has always been a risky business, but all that does today is make you realise the rest of the album is actually as good as that wee blinder. Lost At Sea and Oh Pity are glorious and lush, with those menacing lyrics peaking through while Good Human is nothing shy of a masterpiece.
Why Don't You Love Me: We're really digging deep to find a criticism - but perhaps there's no need to fill every between-songs gap with vaguely pointless pleasantries? Here's a band who really can let the music do the talking.
Oxegen rating: 9/10
