Oxegen 2011 - Cherri Bomb

Hotpress Stage, Friday, 3.50pm

Describe in a tweet: A set of two halves and a decent amount of promise from the female LA rockers.

What happened: To be perfectly blunt, the first fifteen minutes of Cherri Bomb鈥檚 set were awful. The vocals were almost inaudible at times and the instruments just blended together in a mush that made the band almost impossible to listen to at times. They鈥檙e aiming to replicate the iconic Runaways but in reality they sound more like an All Time Low tribute band that are practising together for the first time. Towards the second half, however, things took a surprising turn. Lead singer Julia Pierce unleashes what could only be described as a cracking guitar solo that grabs our attention, a riff that wouldn鈥檛 be out of place in any classic rock track. From there, Cherri Bomb bring their A game. We get to hear the catchy punk pop that they claim is their aim, and track 鈥淪pin鈥 shows the band in their element: decent bass work, driving guitars and hooks aplenty. They proudly proclaim they鈥檙e the 鈥測oungest band鈥 to play at Oxegen: that inexperience does show from time to time, but there鈥檚 enough promise hear to merit checking out Cherri Bomb at a later stage.

Crazy In Love: They鈥檙e an overwhelmingly fun band and that comes across in what Cherri Bomb do: they鈥檙e hard to dislike and they鈥檙e clearly talented. The guitar work is constantly at a high standard, with the great chemistry between Pierce and Miranda Miller becoming evident once the sound problems were fixed.

Why Don't You Love Me: The first twenty minutes, in terms of sound, were horrific. It鈥檚 hard to say quite where the buck lies, but clipping, interference and instruments being completely lost in the mix are the reserve of dilapidated and claustrophobic clubs, not major European festivals.

Oxegen rating: 7/10
