Oxegen 2011 - Tame Impala

Post categories: ,Ìý,Ìý

ATL | 20:15 UK time, Friday, 8 July 2011

2fm/Hotpress stage, Friday, 5.50pm

Describe in a Tweet:Ìý A wave of psychedelic rock almost bringing us to another world.

What happened: Surprisingly young, this band look like they belong in the school assembly hall but play some fantastic psychedelic rock with roots well beyond their years. It's a decent crowd for a band that most people here, blatantly, have never heard of before. But people hang on, being entranced by Tame Impala's hypnotising phased out guitars and tumbling drums. The songs roll into each other, and the sound washes around the tent, soothing those willing to take it down a notch. 'Desire Be, Desire Go' gets people dancing and proves this band, while not laden with pop vocal hooks, can still get a festival crowd (albeit not a massive crowd) going.

Crazy In Love: Jay "Gumby" Watson, aka The Drummer, who creates this ever morphing groove that the whole sound of Tame Impala hinges on. Bit disappointed the drum roll into 'Solitude is Bliss' is given a miss, but we come to the conclusion it's because it would probably take two drummers to do all. Fair enough then.

Why Don't You Love Me: This belongs on the beach with the sun splitting, but the damp tent at an increasingly mud fuelled Oxegen is the reality we've got, which keeps most of us from getting too lost in the music.

Oxegen rating: 7/10
