Belsonic 2011 - Plan B

Describe in a tweet: A one man crowd overshadows everything in his path.

What happened: If you've seen Plan B before, you'll know how his shows start. If not, what a treat - beatboxer Faith SFX is bafflingly good.

He'll 'play' The White Stripes, Tineh Tempah and Major Lazer, mashing up beats, bass and brass all at once, frying our head. How is he doing that?

If anything, Plan B, or at least his opening half hour, is a slight anticlimax.

While '….Strickland Banks' is an impressive and brave album, it's a little one dimensional. The first half of Plan B's set tonight is essentially the lesser known moments from that album and, as a result, he begins to lose us. It takes a blast of 'Charmaine', a dark but welcomed reminder of Plan B mk1 to wake us up. 'She Said' has us right back in the zone, a kind of second album digest and Benjamin Drew at his best.

After that, it's glorious chaos. Faith SFX is back to perform one-man live dubstup remixes of the bands take on 'Stand By Me', 'Forgot About Dre' and 'Kiss from a Rose'. Sound weird? It was, in the best possible way. By the time the band do 'Stay Too Long' it's total bedlam, with the entire band, Plan B and Faith SFX bounding about the stage, bumping into and climbing over each other, struggling to stay on their feet. A fantastic end to an occasionally forgettable show.

Plan A: Who'd have thought a man waking wobbly bass noises makes everything sound a little better?!

Plan B: The soul shtick has officially been over-done - here's to Plan B mk 3.

7/10
