Vital 2011 - D12
Main Stage, 4.40pm
Wednesday the 24th of August
Describe in a Tweet: More than a backing band.
What Happened: Its old fashioned hip-hop - DJ on the decks, and a bunch of MCs to entertain. It's not exactly original, but it’s tried and tested party hip-hop from experienced performers. Songs about drink ('40 oz') and drugs ('Purple Pills' - to be reprised later in the evening with their D12 colleague Eminem) go down well, as they quickly acclimatize to our cultural sensibilities with repeated references to "Drunken mutha-flippers" (editor's note: Not necessarily their choice of words). A pleasing touch comes with a remembrance of their fallen member Big Proof, but whilst it doesn't dampen the mood, the set has an unsatisfactory conclusion as they call for applause and cheers before walking off.
Lose Yourself: It’s easy to forget that these guys had a few good party singles back in the day, all dusted off and given an airing.
Guilty Conscience : The bizarre and bemusing ending. We’re also not exactly pushing too many boundaries in lyrical content.
