Electric Picnic 2011 - Hozier
Cosby Stage, Friday 2nd September, 3.50pm
Describe in a tweet: That's Mr Hozier to you, may I seduce you with my sexy little numbers?
What happened: At some point, someone in Ireland must have asked: "Why don't we have any knee-wobbling artists like Paulo Nutini?". Well folks, Hozier must think he's the answer to that probably-never-asked question. Attempting to fill the void The Thrills left when they wandered off into the Kerry Mountains never to return, Hozier mixes dreamy, swoon-pop, with a bit of sultry blues.
Good Fortune: This reviewer now has a new chat up line, taken straight from the lovely ballad which might be called Snowman Song: "Making love would be a breeze". Sang in tone half way between Van Morrison and Jamie Cullum, it all got very romantic in the Cosby tent, 50 minutes into the festival.
Evil: It all just seems a bit skin deep. He has the look, the sound - but maybe not the depth to go with it. Though saying that, I bet we'll see more of Hozier in the near future.
EP rating: 5/10
