Polar Beyond gig poster

Tonight at the Pavilion we have a mixture of bands that are extremely wet behind the ears ( Evening Vales, Due South), and the slightly more established headliners (The Fourth Exit, Polar Beyond). The Boutique upstairs in the Pavilion is sadly quiet and ATL get the feeling that it is the only person who is not remotely affiliated to any of the acts playing tonight.

First up are Evening Veil, a three piece who play with bundles of enthusiasm, reminiscent of , and with a frontman who wouldn鈥檛 seem out of place in the . This is a group who are very much in their infancy, and it shows with the performance. They have a long way to go, but practice does make perfect after all.

are next to grace the stage, playing only their third gig, and sadly it shows. They're nervous but show promise with their renditions of The Kings of Leon鈥檚 鈥楳olly鈥檚 Chambers鈥 and 鈥楾he Bucket鈥 both going down well, but if they have any intention of being taken seriously they need to take their performance seriously themselves.

are the main support for Polar Beyond tonight, lead vocalist Daniel鈥檚 voice sounding similar to James Hetfield, and their sound being very much influenced by Metallica (though not as heavy). Playing a variety of songs with lovely meandering riffs that lead to powerful crescendos, it鈥檚 a good set, but sadly they should leave their cover of 鈥楢ll Along The Watchtower鈥 well alone next time. Their own songs are good, and they鈥檙e certainly worth keeping an eye out for in the future.

However, the real draw of tonight are , who are down to three members, and have lost a few of their songs as a result. Their sound is a quite a departure from the previous three groups tonight, with more emphasis on vocals and their songs having a much grander feel, full of sweeping ambience and swathes of passion. The parallels they draw with the likes of Muse and Radiohead are not just fleeting references; this group have the ability to craft vast songs, and despite being recently formed in 2010, they have come on leaps and bounds. Perhaps they need to add an extra member to give them a little extra 鈥渙omph鈥, but they performed extremely well and hopefully will continue to get the exposure their skills more than warrant.

Hopefully to a fuller audience next time.
